Back from Oklahoma
« on: June 07, 2009, 09:19:00 PM »
Spent a week in Oklahoma with my wife, but had a couple of chances to get out in the woods.  Checked out Love Valley WMA by myself in the rain and didn't find much hog sign there this time.  At the end of the week I met up with Cam (vanilla gorilla) for a morning hog hunt and my first try at bowfishing.

We didn't get on any hogs, but there was tons of sign.  The bowfishing was fun, and Cam had a gar within 5 minutes.  I thought we were gonna tear 'em up, but not too much action the rest of the afternoon.  I missed a couple of close shots because I didn't properly account for the refraction of light, but it was a great time.  Unfortunately, I gave my cell phone a bath so I had to miss out on the evening hog hunt since I couldn't get in touch with my wife.  (While my cell phone was bathing, I was asking Cam..." Do you hear that buzzing sound?  Where the heck is that coming from.)

Still a great trip and I know some land North of Durant that I'll want to check out some more.

Here is a pic of a hog we found.  Don't know if it was gutshot and left there, or what.  I know it's a pretty gross picture, so I'll throw in some pics of Oklahoma flowers to lighten the mood.

I tried to edit the post above, but couldn't.  The 1st pic is a swampy area in Love Valley WMA. The 2nd is a skunk that had been 3 yards from me.  I waited until he was substantially further away before taking the picture.  The 3rd is of Cam thinking hard about where the hogs might be. The 4th is some wierd bug that we saw that I have no clue what it is.  Reminds me of a hellgrammite.  Next couple of pics are of some pretty land where we were hunting.  The last couple are of the gar Cam shot.

Good pictures. The pig looks like it would've been a nice size. The "bug" looks like one of our centipedes or milipedes (I can't remember how to tell the difference). I hear they bite pretty well, and the pain is quite substantial. Well-done on the fish!

Millipedes have so many legs that they look like fringe. Maybe you can use the centipedes to catch gar with.

Thanks for the flowers.

I used to live on the AR/OK border and had a hunting lease in McAlister.  Sure is some nice country...especially in the Spring.  Thanks for sharing!

Sorry Eddie.  That would have been great, but I was busy most of the time that I was in OK.  Wife lost her job during the week and we had to be packing things up, looking for a new job for her and new place to live,  as well as getting the dogs narcotics certification so that she can make ends meet in the meantime.

OK City is hosting the National HOG(Harley Owners Group) rally this yr in June. These pics are making me wish I have the room on my H-D to tote a bow and some arrows along. You all that live there prepare for a bunch of motorcycles!

Good pics Pat!  Enjoyed the hunt, the ticks, the sunburn and the bowfishin!

Next time you're in, I'll try to get us in range of some pigs that aren't already dead!

For those who didn't recognize that, it is a quote from the Beverly Hillbillies. It was supposed to be funny!   "[dntthnk]"
