After 15 years I finally drew a Maine Moose permit for a cow in unit 6 if anyone can give me any info on this area, where to stay, etc. it would be very helpful.

Steve, you lucky dog! I know Maine residents that have been putting their name in the hat for better than 20 years! and no cigars yet. I have my name in the NH lottery for moose too. I should hear from them soon. Where is unit 6? I have been working up in ME for the last 2 years. I will be going up there to work next saturday. I work up in Houlton, last stop on I-95 before you hit the border. 2 miles from the border to be exact.

For some reasons I've been thinking about you lately. There was a friend of my daughter visiting and she said she lived in Canton for a while. They live close to Cleveland now.

Have you been back to WY? I have not.

God bless,

Jose

Check with Ox Bow Lodge and see if they cover unit 6. I hunted out of there for unit 5. They are a really first class outfit and they will take you were the moose are and worry about how to get it out later rather than just hunt close to the road. They know where the moose are and they have had 100 percent success rate. Granted, most hunt with a gun but they also take archery people out. I hunted with a longbow. You can look them up on line or they can send you a video that will show you some great moose. Make sure you go to the real Ox Bow Lodge. There is another outfit in Ox Bow Maine. You won't go wrong if you hunt with this outfit. It is a once in a life time draw, take advantage of it. Good luck and keep us posted. Did you get the first week or the second?  jwingman

Congrats!  I am one of those who have been putting in for about 20 years without a tag. cow hunting will be more of a challenge, as you can't call them in.  Good luck.  There are a lot of lodges that should be able to help you, I am not sure whcih is zone six, so I can't reccomend any one.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Need anyone to go with you to help drag it out    :biglaugh:

Congrats. It sounds like a once if a lifetime hunt!

You lucky dog!  You live in Ohio and it only took you 15 years to draw a permit.  I live in Maine and I have been applying since 1982.  That's 27 years.  Yes, I said 27 years BUT... last night, I, too got drawn.  Zone 1, Bull, Sept. season.

Your zone is on the northeast border between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada.  Should be a good zone.  Best of luck to you.  Keep us all up to date.  This should be fun.
Congratulations.

By the way, I got an e-mail from Ted Frey today and he gave me some good advice.  I'll share it with you.  A moose is a really, really big animal.  Many people miss completely at close range.  You still need to "pick a spot."

Craig , I was going down the winners list of Warrens and saw your name.I was wondering if it was you. At least one Warren got lucky. I have been applying for over 20 yrs. with no luck.

Hello Jose, no I have not been back to Wyoming yet, hopefully in the near future,  I was just showing some of the pictures last week to some friends and telling them what a great hunt that was.

for the moose hunt I am not going to use a guide,  money is tight.

TJ if you want to go you or more than welcome, I plan on camping the whole week and could use some help hopefully packing a moose out.  With that being said if anyone wants to come along to help out just give me a shout.

Steve, I hope you realize that there is no packing a moose out in ME: you have to bring the whole animal out to the checking station!

Where is unit 6? Maybe it is close to Houlton and I could give you a hand. I should know my schedule for the rest of the year by next week.

I did not get drawn in the NH lottery. I hope for better luck next year. I will put my name in Maine too next year.

God bless,

Jose

You can Quarter the moose to get it out.  Great area to hunt. Learn to call and get off the main dirt roads. Good luck Greg

Steve, I just checked where unit 6 is. Houlton is at the southern border of your unit. I know the butcher shop owner that does most of the moose in  the area. He is a good one. Depending on where you are going to hunt, your best bets for lodging will be either Houlton or Presque Isle, the latter being a larger town with more choices for eating, shopping, etc. I will be flying up to Houlton this coming saturday to work for 2 weeks. I will do some asking around for you.

Do you have a guide? Do you know what part of the unit you will be hunting?

God bless.

Jose

Get a Maine atlas and gazeteer from Delorme map company.  They list all camping sites run by the state or North maine woods association.  That zone does not have as many as the more central zones, but you might still find some.  When I was a sub permitee we tent camped and had a cow only permit.  It took a lot of driving to find a cow.  We ended up sinning and quartering her to get her out.  A good pack, game cart or plastic sled will help.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I have already ordered the gazeteer,  I am not able to us a guide because of lack of funds due to already booked trips this year and I just found out that I am only going to have 4 days to hunt due to work commitments.  i am going to try to swap out with someone in the September season so that I can hunt the full week and not try to rush myself.
