600 grain carbon shafts for 50lb longbow
«

I know this probably has been talked about, but i have been a way for a while and need some advice on a starting point for some 600 grain carbon arrows for my 50 lb longbow. I was thinking 500 spine, but may go for 400 spine cut a little longer, with 250-300 grains up front. but I still don't think that will get me 600 grains total. advice on shaft length, broadhead weight, insert weght?

With most of the 5/16" 400's comming in at 9 to 10 gpp and with 250 to 300 up front you should be right close to your 600 grain goal. A 100 grain brass incert would give you a wide range of broad head weights that you could use as opposed to a 50 grain incert.Plus with a 50# bow and a 400 i dont think a 50 grain incert would be enough. Shaft lenght and tip weight will depend on your tuning.
You more than likly know this but i always like to say it, Carbons react fast to lenght ajustment and slow to point weight so cut a little at a time. If you cut to much its hard to get it back with point weight.

thanks, I was thinking of starting with easton axis 400's at 29-30 inches, brass insert, wraps with 5 inch fletch, and adjust point weight. although i have heard 500's seem to fly well from 45-50lb bows.

If you're getting good arrow flight with a given setup, but are not at the weight you'd like, a really good way to add weight to carbons is the weight tubes that 3 Rivers sells. They're $12 a dozen (I think) and come in 3, 5, and 8 GPI.

Carbon Extreme Heritage 150 shafts are 10 gpi. A 30" arrow with a 100 grain brass insert and 200 grain head will get you to 600+ grains. I found these shafts to be very stiff though. I use this setup on my 60# bows.

download this spine calculator and play with the shafts and weight until you get what you want.

no matter what, when it comes to carbon shafts and arrows, all the chit chat and opinions and calculators are still gonna boil down to your personal testing.
'fraid that's just the way it is with carbon shafts.
fwiw, my main hunting arrows uses beman ics 500's, 29"+ long, 350gr and 375gr up front for 585gr and 610gr total weight arras (no internal tube weights), with my mohawk longbows, 52# & 55# @ 29" draw.

I just got some CE Heritage 150 shafts that fly great from my set up. I cut them 28.5" long BOP, 50 gr brass insert, 250 gr point. Fletched with 5 1/2" shield feathers.
Shooting them from a 50# @ 28" recurve (Prickly Curve by Tracy Trickett) drawn 28". They fly great and weigh in at 630 gr.
I also use GT 3555 cut and fletched the same with 100 gr inserts and 250 gr points. Same great flight and same 630 gr weight.

I use Carbon Express 150's cut to 27.5" from the throat of the nock to the end of the shaft not insert. With 100gr insert, 175gr head and 3 X 5" sheild cur feathers the all up weight is right on 600gr. i use these out of my 50#@25" Jim Jones Fire Fly LongBow which is cut 3/16 past center. They bare shaft very well and fly like darts fletched.

I'd err on the side of weaker rather than stiffer. I end up well over 600 with 400's full length from my 52#, but the 500's I can cut to the length I like and still shoot from both my 46 and 52. Carbons are stiff buggers! I am shooting a 29.5" Beman ICS Bowhunter 500 with a 235 grain Zwickey Delta (135 + 100 gr. adapter) and the regular aluminum insert for a total weight of 525 gr. with a 22.25% FOC and 10.1 grains per pound of draw.
I am not a bit worried about penetration. I know that is less than your 600 grains, but I'm not sure what you will gain. Ashby's reports seem to indicate you need 650 or more grains to break bones, so both of us would be below that. With my high FOC and perfect flight, I'll take the flatter trajectory and shoot through rib bones all day long...not many water buffalo in Iowa.
