Me and my wife have visited my brother in law in Edmund OK. and really like the area and since im out of a job thought it might be a good time to make a move and live near some family. Hows the hunting and is there any public land or will i have to make a friend or buy some? buying land really isn't an option haha!

any advice?

A couple of hours south of Oklahoma City, there is a ton of public hunting land in hickory creek wildlife management area. Lots of hogs, turkey, and deer. Probably not a bad idea to make some friends, anyway.

I live near tulsa. We have plenty of public land but make some friends anyhow. I heard someone mention I think it was here or on bowsite okla section about an Oklahome City hunting group that you buy in and get to hunt a bunch of lease that the group buys up all over the state. Not sure how it all works but you get the idea. Anyhow gad to have ya and welcome to the Sooner State.

Lexington is just south of OKC(public hunting) and I know it has some pretty nice bucks on it, had a buddy shoot at 1 @ 10 years ago, and I now have a friend here that has one bruiser hanging on the wall from there

Just spent some time there (OK City) on a m/c trip. Don't think I was ever in a hotter place. I think they ordered up the hottest temps they could get just to see if us easteners would like it. Don't remember the Cheseapeke bay area ever being that hot and I was born here in the early 50's. My hat is off to anyone that can live there and stand the heat.

Fred, You must have came week before last! Yes it was hotter than normal those two weeks. However thats the norm for the last two weeks in July and first two in August.

Heat ain't gonna bother me... we are just looking for some adventure and a change of scenery. Looking for less people too.

I'm going to have to find out about that lease buy in thing that would be a pretty neat idea.

How far north are those hogs?

There's public hunting land, WMA's all over the State. There is some very good hunting in OK. I was stationed in OKC for 5 1/2 years and had some good hunts.

Lake Thunderbird near Norman has some archery only areas that are pretty good.

there is some great waterfowl and upland bird hunting as well. We had hogs at anadarko, they were in the creek bottoms.

Hey Nightowl, I used to live pretty close to the Arkansas Border, in Latimer Co. Oklahoma and it is FULL OF PUBLIC lands...big deer, turkey, black bear and some decent duck hunting. Just watch out for the "cookers and farmers" if you know what I mean...and if you don't then don't walk up on any suspect crop fields or smoking cabins/contraptions.

A fine and hardy welcome to our great state! Not to brag (or maybe yes, to brag) there are not many big (or small for that matter) game animals you can't get a chance at here in Oklahoma. Some are by draw-in only, but hey still a chance. Elk, whitetail, mulies, antelope, black bear, feral hogs, Eastern/Rio Grande/Merriams turkey; we got it all.

From the southeast part of the state where they get more than 40 inches of rain a year and pine forest predominates, to the end of the panhandle where they barley average 6-8 inches a year. 200 ft above sea level to just above 5,000. Archery season from October 1 till January 15.

At least 1 public hunting area of good size in most every county. Some have several. If your into once in a lifetime, honest-to-goodness monster deer, put your name in for the McAllister Ammo plant hunt.

Big open bottomland hardwoods in the northeast, Sandy, rocky, buzzworm flats in the southwest. The foothills of the Ozarks, the Ouchita Mtns, the Kiamichi Mtns, the Wichita Mtns, Hackberry Flats, Hajek March, the Arkansas, the Candian and the Grande Rivers.

If your willing to work at it a little you will NEVER be board or without something to hunt here in Oklahoma.

Well James...

Here's how I see it. If the 105 degrees with 70 percent humidity in the summer doesn't chase off the light-weights, the 30 mile an hour winds with the single digit wind-chill in the winter will. Oklahoma is definitely a place of extremes!

About 1hr.west of OKC IS Canton WMA, its alittle over 13,000 acres I think. Another hour west is Cooper and Ft. Supply WMA. Combined they are over 21,000 acres and just a few miles apart.

I know that I might not make to many friends saying this, but good luck with the move and getting away from what I consider a poor excuse for public hunting in the state of Texas.

I had to move to Kansas but I still miss Oklahoma...
