A Heartfelt Thank You to the Compton Raffle Donors
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:44:00 PM »
I would like to say a big thank you to all the donors who so generously gave of their time, materials, and talents for the Compton Dream Raffle 2009.  I happen to be the lucky winner of that incredible prize package.  It consisted of a matched pair of custom bows, a matching knife, and pen and pencil set from Ron Foley of Foley Custom Bows in Texas, a gorgeous scrimshaw belt buckle from Marv Clyncke of Boulder, Colorado, a dozen purple heart footed tapered arrows from Jim Shanks of Grand Junction, Colorado, and a Great Northern Bow Quiver from Rick Shepard of GN Quivers in Michigan.  It was an unbelievable surprise when Jim Shanks called to tell me my name had been drawn from the many hundreds or more that entered the Compton Dream Raffle.  Compton is a great organization and I really appreciate all those members and board members who work to make it great as well as the above donors and board members who put so much effort into the rendezvous and raffle.  Unfortunately I was unable to attend the shoot.  Hopefully one of these summers I can make the long trip to Michigan.  It must be a fantastic event.

I apologize if you read this on more than one traditional site.  I felt it was important to let everyone know of my gratitude for the labor that went into this raffle so some lucky person like me could win such a tremendous prize.  Thanks.

Mike

Mike: Congrats to you and also thanks to all who bought raffle tickets.  The Compton Dream Raffle is an important fundraiser and  helps Compton continue to promote traditional bowhunting and also helps fund all of the youth programs. Enjoy the winning package. There is a photo of Mike on the Compton website holding my Foley bow that I bought at the Compton Rendezvous in Berrien Springs.  What bows did you order from Ron?  Jim

Ron Foley is a great guy and more than willing to spend as much time as needed to help me make my choices for the bows and woods I wanted to use in them.  I am actually having a matched set of two longbows made by Ron--a three-piece takedown and a one-piece.  Both bows will have Bocote as the main riser wood accented with Cocobolo--a wave running through the takedown riser.  The limbs will be Birdseye Bocote veneer over bamboo cores.  They will both have antler tips.  Unlike your bow Jim, they will be right handed so I can shoot them.  He will also make a hunting knife and pen/pencil set to match.

I am generally a plain bow kind of guy, but I decided after looking over the beuaty of some of Ron Foley's work that I should have him make a couple of show pieces.  I own quite a few longbows, but these will actually be only the 2nd and 3rd new custom bows I have ever had and the only ones made specifically to my specifications.  If Ron can finish them in time, I will take the takedown on the plane with me to Michigan for a late October whitetail bowhunt I purchased at our local NRA banquet a few months ago.
