Woodsman Elite and hissing
« on: July 15, 2009, 06:31:00 PM »
I bought some of the new woodsman Elite BH and first of all i`m very satisfied with these BH   :)   But to my surprise they do give a whistle or hizzing sound when i shoot them with both Gold tips and my Beman carbon arrows. I was surprised and did have my hunting buddy to stand near the practice target listening and they do give that sound. Then i screwed them on my cedars and then suddenly they where all quiet??
No whistle or hissing at all. Could it be because of the thinner carbons that they give that sound. cedars are 11/32 and the carbons 5/16?
Any of u tradgangers experienced the same?
NB carbons weight 535gr and cedars 555 gr.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Try them on an aluminum arrow to what they do just out of curiosity.

My guess is you just slowed them down some on the heavier cedar arrow. If that was the case they should be quieter on the 2216s as well.

If people are used to shooting and hearing a solid blade braodhead and then try a vented head they WILL hear a noise.   BILL

It might be... and this is just a guess... the wood absorbing the vibration where the stiff carbon does not, therefore causing the noise.  Wood will not recover from paradox nearly as quickly as carbon, so perhaps there is also less spin with the wood.  Since the carbon recovers so quickly, it spins sooner and faster which may be the culprit of the noise.  The more I think about the spinning causing the noise, the more it seems logical... but I could be wrong.

Just my guess...

Actually wood dampens the vibrations more quickly than manufactured shafts. That's the main reason wood arrows are quieter in flight than carbon or aluminum. If both arrows are properly tuned, the paradox should be very close to the same, and the weights are only 20 grains apart.

I think the heads just don't like carbon!    :)

You said you screwed them on your cedars- if you have an adapter on the end of the shaft for that, it's probably providing a smoother air flow past the broadhead and is quieter as a consequence. You could try smoothing the transition from the head to the carbon shaft with tape or something to see if that helps.

No different than shooting a Snuffer. They still keer deer dead though. The hissing sound is behind the arrow as it flys, so it's usually too late for the deer. Your bow string will spook them before the BH does.

Hopw fast is the speed of sound and how fast is an arrow? sound might be behind a bullet coming downrange but not an arra.

Mine hiss too, so did my regular WWs. Can't seem to cure it. No ideas, Course then you would.n't be able to tell whether it was your bow or the BHd they heard?

Just shoot em!LOL

I have never used snuffers but I used muzzys and thunderheads alot and never had the hiss? so not all vented heads are hissing. I was almost going to order some of the screwin WW elits since they are one pieced (thought it might been my mounting job causing the hiss) but a friend said they hissed too?

The hissing sound defintely isn't "behind the arrow" unless you have supersonic arrows.

The old ones hissed too and the WW site implies it's from improperly tuned arrows.  I've killed deer with them but I'm sure it won't help at longer ranges for the deer to hear the hiss of death coming in.  I have no doubt it would help an alert deer to duck the arrow.

I'm sure it's the vortices being disrupted differently behind the head with the fatter shaft.  :)

Wingtip vortices are tubes of circulating air which are left behind a wing as it generates lift. One wingtip vortex trails from the tip of each wing. The cores of vortices spin at very high speed and are regions of very low pressure.

I don't know what Marty said, but it sounds impressive.   I'm still working on what "hizzing" means.    :bigsmyl:

Actually, I had to google vortices to make sure I spelled it right, and found the second part on Wikipedia.   :)

It makes sense to me though.

The Woodsmans must still have the same old whistle. They have always done it for me, to thats why I switched broadheads. I guess that saved me some more money, I was going to give them a try again.

I always had the whistling problem too with the wensels and snuffers but have never tried them with cedars. I will try them with the new cedars I got once my new bow gets here. I actully switched to the zwickey 4 blade last year because of the hissing, but I think I will try the big 160 gr. snuffers this year.

It could of course be the lower speed of the cedars that make the woodsman not hissing, but i have a feeling that it have something to do with the thickness of the arrow. I tested with both silverflames and the woodsman and the woodsman give more sound on the carbons.
The adapters i use on the cedars is tophat adapters from Gebr. Kümmerle GmbH in Germany with a screw in type. Really easy to use and easy to screw of no (need for glue).
