Michigan Bear preference points
« on: July 25, 2009, 03:46:00 PM »
Anyone know how many preference points are generally needed as a minimum to draw a tag?

I bought a point for Wisconsin this year and will be buying a point for Michigan next year to start building my chances.

Was just wondering how many years I might be looking at.

I've got 3 in Michigan and 5 in Wisconsin and no tags this year were drawn in my name in either State. In reality I'll probably get my Michigan tag before my Wisconsin tag!

Here is a link t the drawing results, it shows you how many preference points you need to draw.

I have 5 and Dad has 8.  We probably have enough to draw the first season next year, but we are biding our time.

I bought a leftover tag for the bergaland unit a couple weeks ago. it was for the 3rd. period.
To answer your question tho. it all depends on what BMU and what hunt. I drew in the GWIN unit my first try, it took 4 points and 5 apps to get my AMASA tag. both first hunt periods.
Check out the DNR web site and see what they have left now. if you get one maybe we can throw in together.
Chuck.
SORRY, I just checked and they are sold out.
But keep it in mind for next year.

It all depends on the unit you are applying for.  In some, you have a chance with one or two and virtually guaranteed with three.  In others, like the Baldwin unit, you only have about a 50/50 chance with 8.

Choose your unit carefully and you can get a tag every three years or so.

Don't forget about Minnesota boys. We have good bear hunting here also. It's a lot easier to get a tag, the drawback is 300 pounders aren't too common. A lot of 150-200 pounders. But 3-4 hundred pounders are here.Just depends how lady luck shines on you.

Took me 3 preference points for zone C in Wisconsin this year. Got a pic of this showoff a couple of days ago.  He's been hitting all my baits for the last 2 weeks. I'm hoping the 300#r that I know is around comes back from blueberry picking in the next couple of weeks

Thank you all for the information. I didn't even think about Minnesota.

This is one of those hunts for the future obviously but was just trying to find out how far into the future.

Since like everyone else I'm always dreaming of future hunts thought I'd start planning for some of them.

It wasn't until this year when I was buying my Wisconsin turkey tags when I realized I could buy a preference point for bear.

Then I thought "Hey dummy you could've been doing this for awhile".

Like what has been said, depends on the unit you would like to hunt. I now have 7 points and still waiting to be drawn for the Baldwin area. I'm not interested in appling for the other units because I have a number of bears around here that I think just might die of old age before I get a chanse to slip an arrow into one but it's close to home and easy to bait. In the mean time I'm going to Ont. in 4 weeks where you can always get a tag and Alaska next May where there's less people.
