A padded string is usually done with an endless string, not a flemish. You need a string jig to make one.

After you pull your strand bundles off of the jig, just add a few 7 1/2" to 11" strands to the ends of each waxed bundle. Some guys just build a string with more strands and cut a few out of each bundle , but that always seemed wasteful to me.

Tip from for Ron Jenkins on a video, use B50 strands for the padding. He uses 12 strands of FF for the string body and 8 strands of B50 for the padding.

When you add the extra lengths of B50 in the ends, how do you know how long they need to be? Are all the ones you add exactly the same length?
For example, if you measure 7 1/2" on your string before you start your twisting, would the strands you add also be 7 1/2" or slightly longer or slightly shorter? I am assuming the tip from Rod Jenkins is to add 4 pieces to each end and lay them between your two colors before you wouldd start your initial twist? Thanks Steve

I like my padding strands 12-14" long. They don't have to be exact, but I like to use the same length strands in the string (i.e. if I'm adding 8 strands to a string I want all 8 the same length).
Just add the strands to the end of each bundle--wax helps keep them in place--then twist it up as you normally would.

I thought you could pad a flemmish string by adding equal strands of shorter length B50 into just the loop portions of the string and twisting them in as you normally would. So if you your building a 14 strand, you can add another 4-6 8inch strands to thicken up the loop section.
I recommend watching Chads video to anyone, its a great resource.

I purchased Chad's DVD about a month ago. After building a few strings, I started making them with padded loops as described in his video. If I get in trouble while making a string, I just find the answer on the DVD.

You might also find it at three rivers, not sure on that one.
The video does flemish and endless loop strings. Padded loops in both. Chado builds up a 3ply in the vid, something I hate doing but he sure makes it look like a breeze. They also show serving how to and jig info.
