Tree Pegs
« on: July 31, 2009, 12:04:00 PM »
I was wondering who of you have used LAG Bolts for tree pegs instead of Tree Pegs.

I recently purchased a tree saddle, and I have more tree locations now with the versitilty of wearing my "stand" into the woods. 10 pegs into a tree and there is a stand, and so on and so forth.

I just don't want to spend the money on buying the expensive tree pegs if I don't have to.

In comparing the two, a lag bolt will want to rotate downward much more than a tree peg due to the tree peg having a "Z" type shape and a Lag being straight. I was wondering if any of you have tried a lag bolt and if you were satisfied with the results.

Thanks,
Matt

Unless those trees are on your property, or you have explicit permission from the owner of the trees, I would advise against putting holes in tree using any form of screw-in step. Here in Pa that practice is illegal on any public property.

Matt,

I have been using the skyhooks and the 12mm lag bolts for 15yrs now. I use 200 to 400 of those lag bolts each and every year. I have over 400 of the aluminum steps.

I have never had one pull out or step break. We use 18 volt Dewalt drills to drive in lag bolts and remove them. If you leave lag bolts in tree, past the fall season the tree will grow over. We try to remove all each year. If you forget they can get alot harder to remove following year and socket driver needed for more torque.

We like this system over screw in hooks as it prevents anyone including kids from climbing trees and possibly stealing your stands as well.

We just use Lone wolf hang ons and remove them every time unless hunting next morning again.

My neighbor Has several trees on his land that he hunts every year. They all have big 12" galvanized spikes driven about 6" into them as tree steps. He carries in a quick hanging stand and is in it in minutes. I'd imagine their a real pain to get in the 1st time but real nice to use after their in there. You obviously wouldnt want to be doing this on state land or without the landowners permision.

hey Matt!   do a search on Pow-Wow for "SSWV's tree step education program". might make ya re-think the tree pegs or bolts. I used them for YEARS before that day without any problems what-so-ever but man can things turn bad fast. hate to see this happen to anyone else.

For the last 15 years I've used hang ons.I drilled holes useing the self cleaing bits. Then used 10 inch barn nails.Take them out as you climb down if you wish.

I am with Apexpredator on this one..... I use a woodpecker and GRADE 8 3/8" X 8" bolts for my steps with my Guidos Web. My brother went cheap and bought grade 5's to save some $$$. He didn't !!! They all bent under 220lbs after two hunts and he ate his crow and bought GRADE 8's from his local Fastenal store for cheap. 14 bolts will get you high enough and you have 4 for a foot platform at the top. $30-40 is not much considering you only buy them once and they last a lifetime. Why take a chance on something like a lag bolt that is not fully hardened ? I twisted some off with my 3/8" cordless drill a few years back. Must have been chinese imports or something. I could not believe my eyes until I twisted three of them off in a 2X4. JMHO
