Woodies for T/D longbow
« on: August 12, 2009, 06:14:00 PM »
Hey all,

New to woodies (and to tradgang!) and just wanted to get some opinions on spine before I embark on my first few wood arrows.

I'm currently shooting a T/D Pronghorn (59# @ 28, although it feels a bit lighter). I draw closer to 29''. I am using AD trad heavies cut to 29.75 with 300gr (point and insert) up front for about a 650gr arrow, they fly well and hit HARD.

About what spine should I be looking at for fir? I want to keep the final arrow weight at about 600-650gr. Wouldn't mind cutting the arrow down a bit.

I was thinking 70-75# fir, but I'm worried that 75# will be too stiff unless I leave the arrows really long. 65-70#?

Any ideas?

I'm shooting 65-70 POC with Woodyweights out of my 56# Pronghorn, but I have some old 75-80 shafts that fly equally well. I draw right at 28".

I'm shooting 70-75 tapered fir out of a 55# @ 28 recurve and they also shoot out of my 58# Adcock LB just fine cut at 29 1/2" ... I can shoot both 125 and 160 grain broadheads with not adjustments

decoy,

I have 3 Pronghorn TDs and shoot woodies primarily.  I have one that is 60 inch, 59 # 28 and I draw 29.  I shoot 70-75 spine with 160 grain heads.  Perfect flight.  Hope that helps.

Decoy, it sounds like Dave has you pegged.  I'll assume his arrows are 29.5-30 inches BOP for some broadhead clearance.  How close to center a bow is cut makes a big difference in the spine requirement.  I was thinking a 71 lb spine, so Dave's 70-75 sounds pretty good.
