A weird one
« on: August 14, 2009, 04:15:00 PM »
Moose season for archery opened the tenth around here. I took off the night before to go spend the night in one of my favorite places so I could be out hunting at first light opening mourning. Got where I was going made camp then decided to walk out to a lake about a mile from camp to see if there was much sign around. When I got to the lake I spooked up a big hawk, well I hung around awhile then decided to head back. Well this hawk followed me, then it turned out to be a pair of them. Pretty soon I'm looking over my shoulder all the time expecting them to come swoop down on me. A couple of times I had to yell and wave my arms because they were getting pretty close.  I'd be looking back at one then turn around and the other' be right in front of me. This went on for a good half a mile, kind freaked me out !

The next morning I saw a bull but he was on the move and I couldn't get close enough. But I'm still trying.

I had a pair of red shouldered hawks show up where I was fishing once. They followed me a round looking for a bluegill handout, I guess.
Anytime I landed a fish they would fly down and land really close(within 10').
Good luck with the moose.

The hawk in the picture is a young Gos Hawk it sound like you found a group from a nest they where hoping you would flush some thing for them to catch I have had this same thing happen to me. I am a falconer and I fly Gos hawks.
Take the long way around.

Goshawks are very cool hawks that hunt under mature forest canopy. My hunting buddy is a biologist that did a five year study on the effects of clear cut logging on nesting Goshawks. He and I had very good moose hunting those five years because just about everywhere there was a nesting pair of Goshawks was good moose habitat.I got so fond of Goshawks I named my bows after them.   Bob

You must've smelled dead. I'd suggest a new deodorant.

A few season ago, I had a red tail make several passes at my head before finally moving on. I think my camo confused it and it saw something moving and was just investigating it, LOL.

Around here Mississippi Kites are heck on golfers and fishermen, not to mention stump shooters if ya get near their nests. They will actually make contact while trying to run you away.

Watched a goshawk swoop on a turkey poult my dog flushed out of an overgrown field the other morning.  Don't know if he got it because it was right on the edge of the woods as the turkey headed in.  Didn't want to disturb it if he succeded. Figured if he was willing to takle something bigger than himself he deserved a meal in piece.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Hey I take a shower once a month wether I need it or not !
Actually I think they were attracted to the yellow fletching on my arrows or maybe they just wanted my tradgang ball cap.
