Dipping arrows tomorrow
« on: March 30, 2007, 11:53:00 PM »
I'm dipping a half-dozen CX Heritage 250's tomorrow and have a few questions (this is my first effort).

I have the small cans of bohning dipping paint and a big can of bohning thinner.  I know the instructions say it should drip in 10-15 seconds, but can someone give me a ballpark figure on how much thinner vs. paint.  Is it 50% pain/50% thinner, 75% paint/25% thinner?

Also, after I mix the paint and thinner in the dipping tube, and dip the arrows, can I pour this solution back into the paint can with the unmixed paint?  Or should I store it separately?

I taped and sanded the shafts tonight and will wipe them with acetone tomorrow AM before dipping them.  How many coats?

Thanks.

Zach... 50/50 is gonna be too thin. This is a trial and error thing and no big deal. A little too thin is better than a little too thick in my book.

You should be able to see through the first coat... a white base coat will make your final color much more vivid.

Let the first coat dry and lightly steel wool it. The second coat should be nice and smooth. Repeat the process if that's what it takes to get good coverage.

The 10-15 second drip is a good starting point.

I didn't have white, so I went ahead with the red for a base as well, and I certainly will use a light/white base next time.  Even after the second coat, there are still areas that are somewhat clear- can see brown through them.  Anyway, looks nice nonetheless.  I picked up a couple of empty small paint cans at homedepot this AM and emptied the extra mix into the can.  Will do a third and maybe 4th coat tonight and then do a little cresting tomorrow.  Cut, inserts, and nocks, and its time to shoot.
