New Shooter, arrow selection
« on: August 21, 2009, 08:33:00 PM »
Hey gang, I'm new to the bow and arrow, and I have a few questions about arrow selection. I have a 58" Red Wing Hunter, 45# @ 28". I draw right at 28" or so. I grabbed a few arrows (the only ones I could find right off) and I have a few questions about them.

What I have are carbon, 2 that are 4560 and 2 that are 5060. They came with nocks pre-installed and I added screw in field points that are 100 gr. They are 30" arrows.

When I shoot, sometimes they fly great, and sometimes they seem to move erratically (almost like they are going to end up going end over end, but still hit the target point first).

I know my form is poor, I shot my first ever arrow earlier this year, so I know that is the likely culprit. I just want to make sure that it's not the arrow compounding things.

As a second question, my other bow is a hickory self bow. It seems a shame to shoot carbon arrows out of it, but it's all I have for now. That bow is also 45 @ 28. Will they be ok in there too?

Thanks! Sorry for the long post.

The 4560's I'm going to assume are 500 spine.  THey should shoot ok but I would bump up the point weight to around 125-150grns.  The 5060 I'm assuming are 400 spine and your gonna need to jump up to between 200-300 grains of weight up front with that weight. I would reccommend sticking with te 4560's for the time being.  Once you have become consistent with your form you can worry about perfecting your arrow.

I didn't see your second question.  I would be careful shooting such a light arrow out of a self bow.  I wouldn't shoot a ton of arrows out of it until you can get some woodies. Good luck.

Thanks for the input Rob. I felt like the points may have been too light, but that was all that was available at the time.

I'll keep my eyes open for some woodies for the self bow. Any suggestions as to weight on those?

Chris ,
I can tell you that the 45-60s if they are carbon express are a 400 spine and way too stiff especially with the standard aluminum inserts.
The other ones, I don't have a clue what they are, but my first guess is they are probably too stiff as well. Especially if your only using 100grns up front.
You need something more along the lines of a gold tip 35-55 or maybe even a 15-35.
I'll try to run your specs thru the dynamic spine calculator and see what I come up with.
Also, as a new shooter, you nock point height may be off, I'd check it and put it right around a half inch above center (nocking your arrow under the nock point). And adjust your brace height to about 8 inches from the string, to the lowest part of the grip for starters.
Also, read the tuning advice from A & H archery-

Looks like a 29" beman bowhunter 500 with standard aluminum insert and 200grn points would make a 470grn arrow and get ya where ya need to be.
The Spine you need is a 500spine which would be the =
beman bowhunter 500
gold tip 35-55
or 3rivers trad only 500
You can find what you need thru one of the tradgang sponsers here.
hope this helps,
pm me if you have questions,
sammy

Thanks for the help Sammy. I guess I just need to get out of this little town and hit up a proper sporting goods store to see what I can find  :D

They are CX arrows (2 of them are, the other 2 are wolverine, all of them are carbon though). Those and the 100gr points were all that Wally World had, and I had to use the in store display to determine what arrows may work with my bow (though I knew deep down they were likely referencing compound draw weights).

I am really just trying to avoid buying 1 doz. for $100 until I narrow down what works best with my bow. The guy that sold it to me recommended 2018's to go with it (he was the original owner and had been shooting it for quite some time) but I didn't have any luck finding them.

Thanks!!
