Beman Classic MFX Selection Help
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:09:00 AM »
New to recurves, I only have the Beman MFX's available for carbon.  Plenty of options for aluminum, but would prefer carbon.

Bow to be used for Whitetail hunting:
- Super Kodiak 50lbs@28in, FF
- 29in draw length....53lbs
- 31in arrow length
- 125gr Magnus Stinger

The charts are so close, 340 or 400?
What difference would I notice between to two...?

If I have to go the aluminum route, many are suggesting 2018...

Any tips would really help me out.

Thanks

I'd say with only 125 up front you gonna want to shoot 500's. Sometimes the charts are a little stiff. Maybe someone will come along that is shooting 400's out of a similar setup, but my guess is 500

looks like maybe a 340 with a 100grn brass insert might do it =
594grs arrow with 17.3% foc.

Hopefully someone else can varify this, or suggest something else that will tune better?

I too would say 400's or 500's,  my first would be 400's with 50 to 100grn brass insert.

I shoot MFX Classic's w/ 100gr brass insert and a 125gr point off my 50-54# recurves. Arrows are cut to 29.5". 2018's also fly very well off the bows

You could shoot the 400 if you want to load them up in the front. I shoot full length (31.5) 400 from a Hill style LB #55-56 @ 29.5", thats with 275-300g up front. The Super-K is cut to center or past so you can handle a little stiffer spine than my bow. I use a 100g insert, 75g adapter, 125g Woodsman BH, arrow flight is beautifull.

Is this with a 400 spine?

My setup is similar, except mine are MFX 500 Classics and are cut to 29.25" shot out of a Beeler hybrid longbow and about a 27" draw length around 51#. I also have a 2 inch section of 2020 footing which adds 27 grains more. Arrow flight=perfect.

It's looking like I'll try 400's, 100gr insert, 125gr head, standard 5in fletch.

For some reason the shop here doesn't even carry the 340's....?

So far, I have heard 340...400...and 500

Anyone else have experience with MFX?

Is aluminum a better option?  Easier to work with?

I shoot a 45# Zipper Zipstick Long bow

My arrows are MFX 500 29.5" long standerd insert with 145gr. point total wt is 480 gr.

That set up bare shafts perfect and my bare shaft hits were my fletched arrows do.

340 would be too stiff.  400 sounds good with a 100 grain brass insert and 125 head.  500 with 125 grain head and standard insert.  Foot em with an inch or so of aluminum arrow and they are bulletproof.
It's not the arrival, it's the journey.

340 too stiff, Ok...I'm definitely leaning towards 400's

Exactly how do I foot an arrow with aluminum and why?

...this is all new to me coming from compound bows...

400's with heavy front weight or 500 with less weight up front. For my money I think they tend to be very stiff and would go 500 and still use the 100 gr brass insert but it is different for each bow and shooter. Drew

Greg, the "footing" or "sleeve" idea is a section of aluminum arrow(1 or 2 inches) you cut off and glue over the end of a carbon arrow to make the end much tougher to break. People forget they are giving advice to someone trying something new to them. They should have told you what size aluminum fits snugly over that arrow, too. I have no idea myself.

I'll throw my .02 in for toots and suggest aluminum(maybe 2016 or 2018). Plenty of weight starting out with less complications. Plus if you already have the broadheads, you're good to go.

I think sticking with carbon is best.  Carbon is far more forgiving, stiff, recovers from paradox faster, and thinner for penetration.  Try the 400, 100 gr insert, 100 or 125 gr tip.  I think that really should work.  You may need to go a bit shorter than 31" though...
God Bless,
Erik
