Penetration??
« on: August 31, 2009, 06:13:00 PM »
Heres the deal,,,I am shooting a Fox bow.      62"-53#-@ 28"   I have been shooting tapered arrow dynamics traditional full length
32-3/8 long arrows (not sure what the gpi is can someone help me with that?)with 100 gr insert's and a 175 grn. broadhead. I am guessing that the AD's are at least 11 gpi for a total weight of 605 grn's..
They have been flying pretty true for the most part better than anything i have tried in the past..
Today i was making up some stumping arrows, They are gold tip 3555 30 1/2" long with 85 grn insert and a 125 broadhead.
I think the GT's go 10 gpi for around 300grn add the insert and broadhead for a total weight of 500 grn's..
The GT's are flying PERFECT!! and are flying much faster than the AD's,, and are getting at least 6 more inches of penetration than the AD's..
After reading a recent slightly heated thread on arrow weights for Elk, I am just a little confused on why a 500 grn arrow will penetrate deeper than a 600 grn arrow..
The only thing i can think of is the GT is a smaller diameter arrow..
Any thoughts??

It may be as simple as the new arrows are flying straighter than the arrow dynamics. That would account for the better penetration. Weight of the arrow is beneficial only if it is flying straight when it hits the target.

Thanks Bill I wondered about that. The AD's would fly a little nock left,, But would enter the target perfectly straight.

runamuk, it may be seem to be entering the target straight, but if there is any variable movement, then penetration will be sacrificed while the arrow corrects itself.

Perfect arrow flight trumps a lot of other variables, including differences in weight.

Quite a bit of difference in diameter between those arrows up front, as well.

GT's run a little lighter than 10 gr per in.  Do you have a reloading scale you can use to get real weights for each setup?

Good arrow flight as mentioned above would seem to be the reason that the lighter arrows are getting more penetration.

Thanks everybody,,It sounds like poor arrow flight is the main problem.. And yea i have scales but they are mighty old and i don't trust em anymore..
I am finding out just how valueable they can be, I will be ordering some tonite..
I really like the AD's and would like to tune em in for the best performence..Plus i like the idea of a little heavier arrow..I know when the arrow enters the target nock left the arrow is stiff..Whats going on when my arrow flys a little nock left but enters the target straight?

Are you a right or left hand shooter. If you are a right hand shooter and it hits nock left, you are weak not stiff.

If you are are shooting weak, you may cut down your arrows a little at a time until they come in
you can also cut back on tip weight,
you can also build out the side plate of your bow a little, and play with brace heighth,
I would work on the arrow if I were you by cutting down the arrow and trying less tip weight first, good luck , and have fun.

If your shafts are already at length and you  are using the brass inserts (100 grain) you can trim some of the brass away with a hacksaw.  You WILL need a scale for this.  Also...if you are using steel inserts you could try the aluminum.
