I screwed up and bought a right wing fletching jig and have been using right wing feathers despite the fact that I am right handed and understand that I should be using left wing feathers.

Since the feathers don't impart a twist on the arrow until after it clears the shelf, what is the point of the use of one vs. the other? Does it have to do with shelf contact? Is there a noticable difference in flight or impact characterisitcs?

Please help, I've invested in quite a few feathers and don't want to get too much deeper if there is some major issue I'm missing...

Fear not. It shouldn't matter which twist you are shooting. If you are shooting single bevel broadheads, however, that is a different story.

I bought single bevels that match the right hand twist, so that shouldn't be an issue, correct?

Juan, how you doing? Don't worry about it. I know alot of right hand shooters who use right wings and are great shots and have taken many a game animal! I use left, only because that was what I was given, when young. Have fun and Good shootin, Steve.

centaurs answer is correct...the whole left hand-left wing, right hand-right wing thing is an old wifes tale and matters not one little bit. (unless as he said you're shooting single bevels that are opposite bevel than the fletch.)

if you are getting fletching contact try rotating the nock etc.

I do have some funny wear on the shelf but I suspect it's a tuning issue. The feathers don't appear to be worn so something about the shaft contact is off. Perhaps a wee bit too stiff. I guess I'll just have to keep on shooting and messing around with arrows... Dang, what a problem to have. LOL!

Some people, especially when shooting with no shelf, will experience better clearance with a particular wing.
Aside from that, as already mentioned, it makes not one bit of difference.
For the record, I shoot right hand and use right wing feathers exclusively with no issues that aren't my own fault.

I am with Hickstick on this one as I have made sure that I had both Right and Left wing clamps for my fletching jigs so that I could take advantage of whatever feathers are for sale. Early on I was told to only shoot right wing but as usual I did all my own experimenting and found it just did not matter. Now, with that said, as most know the one thing that can alter this would be arrow speeds that are MUCH faster than anything I currently shoot so let that be one of the qualifiers here. If someone can chime in that shoots in the 200 fps range and can offer us some experience with shooting both wings that would be great.

Talked to a "compound expert" he says it doesn't make any difference at "higher speeds" either, apparently even fobs are helical now? So I did some more digging, turns out the arrow doesn't even start to rotate till about 20-30 feet from the bow! Only time it matters is if your using a single bevel.

I shoot left wings and the only problem I have is when I shoot my aluminum arrows, the tip will loosen because of the counter clockwise spin. <>< del

I was wondering about the screw in point thing. I shoot right wing and get loose point all the time. I don't see that it helps much.

I am just getting ready to get a jig and some supplies to get started. Is there any cost or availably concerns between right and left?

A little string wax on the threads solves the loosening problem.

I am a right handed shooter and I shoot right wing fletch...have been for over 10 years. They fly so well that I actually just shoot 2 fletch. Of course I bare shaft tune first but I actually prefer the right wing over left because of the way they lay on the arrow. To me, they are less intrusive to the eye then the left wing because the back of the fletch is lower on the right wing and the back of the left wing fletch is sticking up higher because of the way it rotates around the shaft. Check it out sometime.

Left wing clears my bow hand a little better.

If you are willing to rotate your nocks a bit, even that becomes a non-issue.
