New bow brings some questions...

Hello everyone!   Ive been shooting a 35# PSE recurve for years and finally picked up something a bit nicer and more powerful because I want to get into bowhunting.   Its a Roy Hall Navajo Stick "Diamond".   55# @ 28", 58".   The risers seem to have some separating in the lamination or possible cracks in the limbs... do these look like a problem?   Also, I do not have arrows for this bow and not exactly sure what I need.  My draw length is 28" to 28.5" and I am looking for wooden arrows.   I have been looking at    these  arrows but do not know what spine I should get as well as what grain broadheads/field points.   Thanks for reading, pics below!

I have a longbow that looked just like that. I sanded the whole bow down with fine sandpaper and resealed it with spray polyurethane.

Jammin,

   The flecking on top of the limb is most likely the finish and can be sanded off and refinished. But that area looks like it has been over stressed, maybe do to over drawing. The dark lines on the side and the bigger bubbles indicate that it may have taken on some moisture for awhile. You need to sand and penetrate with a thin CA glue and refinish. And you may still get plenty of life out of her.

anyone have some advice about arrows?   60-65 spine and 145 to 150 grain broadheads sound good?

I had a bow just like that with curly maple in the limbs from Roy and had the same trouble! if you draw the bow have someone watch to see if the grains open up, if they do I would send it to him to get it fixed! my bow started with one crack then it kept cracking on every grain in the limb right near the fadeout! It's better to be safe than sorry!! Jason

I have had similar looking stress lines on a bow before and it was only the finish. The finish if applied too heavy on the back of the limbs will often stretch and crack and looks like your pictures. I think you could have it refinished and they would disappear.

i would maybe call 3 rivers and get a test pack for the arrows and that would help out and after that i would call the nocking point and have mike make you some arrows he's the best i've seen

I would e-mail the bowyer these pics and get his take on it, I would be cautious of the four cracks in the top lamination.

As for wood arrows....I would think 65-70 spine with that weight head.

i agree i think the bow will be ok with some steel wool or light sand paper.i like to use.poly [satin finish].for arrows at your draw i would try some 65/70 weight arrows,just take a little off of one until you get good flight then cut the rest.if you have some buddies close by dig into their arrow bucket.you may also have to try heavy or lighter tips.have fun and good luck in quest for good arrow flight..chris

Sorry, I did not notice the cracks in the wood laminate under the glass when I made my first observation and post. Like others have said, send these photos to the bowyer and get his feel regarding the situation. With those cracks in the wood laminate I don't think I would be shooting the bow at all. The little white checks in the finish are simply cosmetic but the cracks in the limb laminations are another story.
