Caribou Hunt...Getting Started

Hello All,

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get started on planning a caribou hunt? At this point, all I know is I want to go. I have no ideas on cost, where to start looking, productive areas, how to start researching, etc.

Any guidance from those of you who chase Caribou would be great!

I took this bull and one other bull with the bow in the picture back in 2001 with True North Safaris. They have taken many traditional bowhunters. All I can say is do it, you will have the time of your life.The hunting is hard and when you get there you will think that it can't be done with a bow. Just keep on stalking and you should get a shot, but it will be a walking one 9 out of 10 times.
You can do it cheaper on your own in Alaska but for what they provide in a cabin, guide, food and boat it's hard to beat if you ask me.

Go with Gary Gieb at True North Safaris. It's on Mackay Lake in the N.W.T. Great trad hunt, 7 of us, 7 bulls with 5 qualifying for the book( if big matters )

Twostrings, I did an article for the Primitive Archer mag. on that hunt, they ran it back in 2002 I think. You can email or call me anytime you want. I will be in Wyoming for two weeks after Wed. of this week on a hunting trip.

I've been fortunate enuf to hunt caribou twice, both times in Quebec; first time was famine, second was feast.  I liked hunting in the Lac Minto area.  The terrain had some features and there was plenty of trees and brush to help with stalking and getting set up.  Either spot them and get in front or set up in funnels in travel areas.  Definitely practice up on walking speed shots as they seldom stop and then not for long.

Mike, I just noticed the bow...Wow! What is that exactly? It looks like one gnarley homemade selfbow. I would love to hear the details of what you decided to hunt with on that trip.

That bow is a takedown osage flatbow that I made back in 1999.
I have taken a black bear in Canada with it as well and have pulled it out of moth balls to go to Wyoming with me later this week on a mule deer, antelope hunt.
