AD Hammerhead question??
« on: September 09, 2009, 11:54:00 PM »
If you start out with the Hammerhead spined 55LB to 70LB.  Add 100 grain brass insert, 160 grain snuffer, 125 grain steel adapter, 15 grain collar.810 grain finished arrow. Arrow are cut to 29 1/2 inches. How much have you reduced the spine of the arrow? The bare shafts flew good full length. cut the arrows down to 29 1/2.  The bare shafts showed weak spine kicking to the right.  Most threads state you want the spine weak before fletching. Fletched up the arrows and now I have a slight kick. I have not paper tested yet. I have swapped FP from 125 steel to 45 aluminum.  No change in the kick.  Shooting at 6 ft all the arrow kick nock high no matter where I nock the arrow.  I am thinking that the spine is to light with all the weight.  I did build out the side plate 1/8 inch with alittle improvement. I thought Hammerheads were designed to be EFOC.  Have I overdone it.  I am shooting 70LB at full draw.  I did try 160 grain less FP and the the arrows kicked bad left, overspine.

Eddie , Both myself (designer of the Hammer head) and the manufacturer ( Arrow Dynamics do not recommend bare shaft testing, I am not going to go into the logistics once again but take my word , most of the time bare shafting ADs will not work , yes some people have done this with good results, most have the same problem you are experiencing.
My suggestion is put on some feathers and try again.
Also you are correct that the Hammer Head was designed to be EFOC, the idea was to come up with an arrow that full length with an aluminum insert and a 125 gr. point would weigh in at 600 gr.
Cut them to 29 and use the same you would have 550 apx and could go from there with different weight points to achieve the mass weight you require.
This idea works from many weight bows for many different people ( not all).
Put on some feathers and try again

Mr Fry; Thank you for your reply.  I am afraid I may have put to much weight up front and now the arrow spine is to light. I have added to the side plate with better results, but I am still getting less then perfect flight. I can not tell any differance between a 810 gr arrow and a 730 gr.Still less then perfect flight.  All the arrows are fletched with 3 - 5 inch, left helical. When I try a 110 gr target point it flies bad left, over spine??  Does AD have a site I could read the correct way to tune my arrows???

My Hammerhead arrows without points are 610 grains. That is with a 31 3/8" arrow measured from the throat of the nock to the front of the brass insert. My arrow has a 100 grain brass insert with 70 grains of additional brass weights screwed and glued into the back of the insert. It also has the uni-bushing with g-nock and 4" four fletch. I have used points/broadheads from 125 grains to 315 grains with no problem from my 60" Super Shrew drawing 68#@29 1/2". With a longer arrow and even heavier point weight from a comparable poundage bow I would think my arrows would be showing even weaker than yours, Eddie, but they fly very straight. Like Ted and others recommend, I did not bare shaft the Hammerheads.  Sorry you are having some problems.

Maybe I should be looking to the bow for the problem.  I did notice that the velcro on the shelf way worn and the side plate was worn also.  This makes the arrow sit in a trough.  I tried useing Bear rug on the shelf and the solid leather on the side plate.  I did see a change for the better.  Thinking the arrows were weak, I built out the side plate another 1/8 inch and saw more inprovement.  Maybe that is because the arrow is not in the trough now.  How does the brace height affect arrow flight?  I started low with a new season string and increase until it stopped slapping my arm and not more shock. I do not know how to adjust brace height for arrow flight. You are right, I see no differance in the flight with BH from 125 to 250 grain. I did notice under the original side plate, Tim had a piece of match stick wood under the leather.

I shoot both AD Trads and the Hammerheads. 30" with 100 gr brass insert and 300 gr points. Fly perfect out of my 55-64 pound bows, from an old 1962 Kodiak Special at 55# up to my Brackenbury Quest at 64#.

Capt. I will be out hunting for a few days , happy to speak with you regarding all this next week, first off check your brace height of the bow , most arrow flight problems seem to be around this ( very important).
