5 days of hiking..er elk hunting
« on: September 12, 2009, 11:21:00 AM »
Just got in from 5 days on the mountain searching for a species that is purported to live there; ie, elk.  Took some nice long hikes and the weather was really nice.. a little too nice for elk hunting, I guess.

Our raspberry crop has been very good this year, i used a few of the stragglers as trail snacks. I don't remember berries being still around in September in most years.

The aspens are beginning to get colorful, even in the warm weather.

Cattle were everywhere, which no doubt does nothing for the elk hunting, but I did see some wildlife.

The worst day hunting is usually better than a good day working, though.

I did get in some serious stump shooting, and the new Pronghorn is a great bow. Now, if it can just kill something besides pine trees, and yes I meant to do that from 30 paces....

Washing and regrouping so that I can head out again Monday for another few days. On an up note, I woke up at 0100 last night to hear a bull bugling; hope he is still around next week.

Centaur, My son just got back from his mule deer hunt out there. He hunted farther south than you'd recommended, but he reported seeing/hearing elk on a daily basis, including a pretty nice five-point. They also had moose right around camp.  They were camped on Caribou Creek, and hunted the surrounding area. This was his first western hunt, and it left an impression on him. He loved it. Thanks for the help, and good luck.

Knobby,
Glad your son had a good time. Caribou Cr is out of my elk area, but I have caught some decent trout there. Did your son get his critter?

Hey Pat. I just talked to a friend of mine that is hunting in your area as well. He said that he has been finding elk but only really high. He mentioned that they are starting to bugle more and more especially in the early afternoon. I hope that you get on them.

I am headed back up tomorrow.

Centaur, Unfortunately, my sons' only shot was about a twenty-five yarder at a three-by on the last morning. The bucks legs were too long, and the arrow passed underneath. In hindsight, a doe tag would have been a good purchase. However, his friend recorded his first bow-kill, so that was surely a plus. Good luck to both you and Randy, and thanks again to all that came forward with advice for the two rookies.
