Help! Elk Hunt...what to pack in?
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:11:00 PM »
Going on my second elk hunt, but first where we are packing in and camping.  Packing in on Thursday and then out the next Wednesday.  5 days, 6 nights.

Loaded up my pack yesterday and wondering what I should take out.  Let's just say it ways a ton!!!!

I know there are folks on here that regularly go on hunts like this.

Do you have a list of what you take?

I think the clothes make up most of the weight.  I packed:
rain gear (probably the heaviest part)
4 pairs of socks
3 long sleeve T shirts
2 pairs camo pants
1 fleece vest
2 turtlenecks
2 pairs of long underwear

I am thinking I will take out the rain gear and go get some of the really light rain gear.  Also, take out 1 t-shirt, 1 turtleneck.

Any help is appreciated!

loose half of your clothes to begin with.  I usually bring just what I need for clothing and some powder soap to clean socks with.

I would definitely get some lightweight raingear. I have the space rain ultra from cabelas and it works great.  Weighs about 1 pound for each piece.  Like nurayb said too, leave half of those clothes home.  Normally if I was going for a week my pack would weigh between 65 and 70 lbs anyway.  Just giving you an idea of what is normal. Do you have plans if you get something on the ground?  It will be tough without some help.

Just pack a pair of socks and some raingear.  You can put on your raingear if its really cold and it will help as a wind block.  If its too warm to wear a base layer while packing in, you'd obviosly be packing that as well.

No use trying to change clothes b/c you are going to stink anyways.

I just did 6 nights in the backcountry and here is what I wore/packed (from a clothing standpoint):

What I wore:
Sitka 90% top and bottom
Sitka beanie
Poly base layer top and bottom
Poly briefs
Smartwool socks (1 pair)
***Get too warm, peel something off and put in your pack.  Get chilly, put it back on.

what I packed (extra stuff):
Smartwool socks (1 pair)
Redhead thunderlight rain pants and jacket

Have fun!

Thanks for the replies!

We do have options if we get one.  There are 7 of us to help pack one out, but we also have some outfitters we can call to pack it out for us.

Guess I will be heading to Bass Pro or Cabela's tomorrow.  I have a light rain top, but need some bottoms, then I can leave the heavy rain gear home!

Well, made it by bass pro.  Got some lighter rain gear and some lighter cargo pants too.

Reduced weight from 50 to 45 lbs.  When I strap on the pack it doesn't seem to bad, but when I lift it to put it on it is another story!  This is my day pack and hike pack combined!

I should weigh the pack while empty to se how much I am really adding!
