AD Hammerheads spine?
« on: September 16, 2009, 11:28:00 PM »
On the AD web site the traditional arrows spine for bows 50 to 70.  What do the Hammerheads spine out.  I continue to have them kick right.  I have built out the side plate with much improvement. I would think 400grains on the end of the shaft would effect the spine. As you increase the weight of the arrow you are also decreasing the spine of the arrow ,Correct?? It appears the 810 gr arrow now is spined to light to be shot out of a 69 LB bow.  The bow is built to center shot.  That may be why some people can shot this setup.  Their bows are not cut to center.  A 70LB old style longbow can shot a 60 lb spine arrow. This right pattern is with feathers, not bareshaft.  Is there a site that I can go to for tuning AD shafts?

Let's start at the beginning.

You have AD Hammerhead Traditionals correct?

What's your Draw Length?

What's your Arrow Length?

Brass inserts or aluminum?

Type of feather cut?  I had customer tell me that he cannot shoot Banana cut feather with the AD's.

Yes I have AD hammerhead traditionals
My draw lenth is 28 1/2 inches.
The arrow length is 29 1/ inches.
I have 100 grain brass inserts.
Parabolic feather cut. 3-5 inch.
I have been using 160 snuffer with both 45 gr adapter and 125 gr steel adapters.
Tim states that the Treesticks are cut to center.
I have been shooting 40 years but never with carbon. Thank you for your help.

To  answer  your question, I have one AD Hammerhead Trad shaft which measures 0.287" deflection with 26" centres, 2.00# weight. 0.287" = 90.6#. This is with the slimmest part of the shaft held in one support.

Have you tried other point wts?  You are correct, when more point wt is added spine decreases.

Are you getting the same flight using field points and the snuffers? (same kick happening).
Are you shooting Right or Left hand?

There seems to be other issues at work here also, the arrows should be flying great for you.

I shot right handed. Both ribtec 160, field points and snuffers kick the same. 110 grain FP fly bad left.  I did shot some 110 Magnus BH and they flew with the snuffers. Would this arrow be considered weak and that is why it needs the side plate.  I guess I could try shooting a lighter head but then I would need more BHs.  I light the 160 BHs I shot now.  I am going to try am elevated rest and see if that helps. Then I can try vanes and have an all weather set up. Will not have to worry about crushed feathers and crooked arrows.

Left is stiff, Right is weak.

If 110 fly left then going to the 160's should have had them flying good. Maybe this pic will help out.

I thought AD was against bare shaft tuning. Should i take the feathers off on arrow and tune as you show above? By tune, I mean to build out the side plate even more if nessecary. I am going to try an old style flipper rest tomorrow to make sure it is not an issue with the shelf.

Ok, Here is what I have learned over the past year shoot AD woodgrain Trads... They can be bare shaft tested, however once they are fletched you can just about shoot any weight up front with little change. They do indeed have a small kick right out of the bow and it is noticable especially if you shoot a longer shaft as I do at 31.5". I have found that by raising my brace height just 3/16  corrected the kicking problem, and I can tell if my brace height falls 1/16 because they start kicking again.I have always trusted the bare shaft testing method and just didnt feel comfortable unless they fly out of the bow true. Therefore, I have stuck with a 125 grain point with the original insert with a total arrow weight of 550 grains. Seems to work for me for now.
