Beechnuts

I know deer eat beechnuts, but do they prefer them over other hard mast? How often do beech trees make nuts, it's not something I've seen very often in GA.

I found a spot this morning next to a beaver pond with 6-8 20-30 inch diameter beech trees and the ground is litterly covered with nuts, I guess knocked off from all the rain we have had.

I'de set up a stand there. Beechnuts are an early nut up here in the Northeast and when I  find them I hunt them. Usually I may get two weeks of hunting them and then they are all gone. Deer love them.

I think they prefer whichever is present. Where I live we rarely have a good beechnut and acorn year at the same time. I can tell you that heavy beechnuts are a real attractor for turkeys in the fall!

One thing about beechnuts is that even though you see plenty of sign of them on the ground, sometimes the shells are empty.  Some years it appears to be a great year for beech's but the nuts will be missing from the husks.

Not had much luck hunting over them.  I do know turkeys love them but have a hard time killin deer.

i definitly prefer hunting over beech when there is a heavy mast as opposed to acorns. just in my experiance where i hunt deer come to them like a magnet.

Deer and bear both love beechies in the north woods, the bad thing is when they are good the feeding zones on the ridges can go for miles. Very hard to set up on them. Now that a turkey population is around in the north, they can clean them up real quick. But you can always hunt them to...lol.

Beechnuts are animal candy, If you find nuts on the ground the deer will come.
