Sitka gear Cold front Coat
« on: October 04, 2009, 07:29:00 AM »
Has any one seen this Cold front coat. I've read post about the other Sitka but not on this. They have some new products just wondering how it stacks up against high end wool.

I just recieved mine. I love the fit and it feels warm. I'll be using it over the next few weeks in both Utah and Montana. I'll let you know how it performs. Although, if its anything like the rest of my Sitka...I'm going to love it!!

Mike, The Coldfront jacket is really more of a really decked out rain jacket bud. I don't have it, nor have I ever seen one, but that's what I've gathered from the site.

Sitka's warmest jacket(says it right in the description) is the Kelvin Jacket. It's insulated with Prima-loft 1...

I will have one on the way to me by the end of the week. But even it is designed to wear under a shell. I plan on giving mine a real good workout this late season.

I got it in a large to fit under my XL Celsius jacket when need be....

I'm a huge fan of good quality wool, but the Sitka gear has often made me want to try it.  I don't own any of it...but it looks nice.  I told my wife that I just bought a new wool coat and a vest and that its gonna hurt the pocketbook.  She asked me how much it cost, and when I told her she about had a heart attack!  At least until I pointed out the numerous pairs of shoes that she owns that I have never seen her wear!

Jon,

Yes, wool is an excellent garment. It would be unfair to say anything negative about wool. With Sitka the theroy is simple. Much of the warmth of wool without the bulk. I own just about everything Sitka makes (benefit of being PS director). I can say that I certainly do love wool, but these days the great majority of my hunting is done in Sitka. Its warm, comfortable, and very user friendly. Plus the new "Optifade" camo really is amazing. The science behind it is remarkable and I'm a firm believer in the whole Sitka "layering" theory. I realize its expensive and to quote an old cliche' "You often times get what you pay for". I think the Sitka gear is great and I highly recomend it. Get a hold of me at [email protected]  I'll see about getting you in some Sitka at a discount price.

I just tested out the newest piece of WARM Sitka Gear in Alaska last week.  They have a new inner layer called Kelvin.  There is a coat and a vest.  They are about an inch thick and weigh  maybe a pound.  I will bet my life that this is warmer than any wool jacket.  I have Gray Wolf wool which I believe is far superior to KOM or SI and it sits in the closet since I started wearing Sitka Gear.  The deal is sealed now--I can sell the wool I was keeping for the super cold. I don't know how it is done, but it is awesome.  After sitting all day in 40-45 deg rain, I started to get chilled.  I threw my Kelving jacket on under the rain gear and I warmed up instantly...even my feet in my crummy hip boots!

Since it is designed to be an inner layer, the outer skin of it is a slippery, noisy nylon.  Under my 90% jacket or any other layer it is going to be just fine IMO.  I'm going to try to convince the powers that be (Peter   :D  ) to make a similarly insulated coat as an outer layer.

Pete can I get that Kelvin in color.Something other than a camo color? Sitka looks nice,I would be interested in that Kelving jacket and would wear it as a layering system under my wool. I am not trying to be a smart ars but I luv my wool and would be hard pressed to get rid of it. I do know that this new gear is also top shelf and would like to try or see some of this stuff.Good luck wapiti

I have to admit I was a skeptic.  Every company advertises that what they sell is the best.

I got a pair of their pants just before my elk trip.  Also had a couple pairs of under armour pants.  If I could I would return the under armour and get more sitka.

I can't list all the advantages here, but a big one for me was that when it was snowing the wet snow stuck to everything except the pants, so they never got wet, can't say the same for shirt, hat, gloves, boots, and pack.  Also, I have been a believer in the silver technology to help with scent control for a few years.  I wore these pants 3 of our five days of hunting and they still smell fresh!  The other pants I had were scent bombs after half a day!

When I search for location on the site it all goes to idaho. Will be in Twin in Jan.Thanks and good hunting.

You western guys...

I bought the Kelvin for two reasons; the first was to layer UNDER my outer layer for sitting in the treestand here.  But the second and most useful reason was for out there.  Typically, when I hunt out west it is a lot of spotting and a little stalking.  The Kelvin is PERFECT to slip on to sit and glass in the cold wind.  It takes up very little room in your pack, so you just slip it on after your long hike in and slip it off when you go for your stalk... warm and comfy all the time   ;)

Wahoo,

They had it at Sportsmans Warehouse and Schnees last year when I was in Bozeman.

Wahoo,

In the Bozeman area:

1. The Powder Horn sport

2. Big Sky archery

3. Sportsmans Warehouse

All 3 carry Sitka. If you go to the Powder Horn ask for "Les" the GM. He is a friend of mine and a great guy. Also very knowledgable about Sitka!!

If you go to Big Sky Archery, ask for Bill. He is also a good friend of mine and a solid guy. He also knows alot about Sitka.

Both guys will help you and make sure you tell them I sent ya! P.S. Take Les to MacKenzie River Pizza and buy him lunch. Than send me the bill. I owe him lunch.

As for Bill? He loves a cold beer.

Good luck and let me know how else I can help you.

Thanks I was looking at the Sitka gear. I am a wool fan and that jacket looked nice for all fall and I was wondering is it too heavy or could I wear wool over the top as a layering system in Dec.I am going thru Bozo town in Nov and will stop at these shops. I have a KOM shirt that I wear as a coat so I was interested in something that may be used together.I love Mackenzie and cold beer also .This could work out real good.

Well I've bought and traded for some and I do like how sleek it is compaired to other materials. Thanks for the info on the Kelvin line I'll most likely get that for under layering. I do like the idea of the Cold Front being water proof, I have good wool but it does suck up some water and get heavy. I'll do some late season layering with all the above. It sure beats lugging around some of my heavier high end wool though.

Mike, You hit on one of the the things I like most about my Sitka....it's extreme weight to warmth ratio!   You'll really feel a difference while wearing it as well, it doesn't wear ya out while wearing it.
