TOMORROW
"whaddya think?, Still want to go tomorrow? They're
calling for sleet and rain."
"Sure! You only go around once. I'm waxing the bow now
and I'II be there at 5 AM."
There really wasn't any need to call. You're as crazy
as I am, and wouldn't let a little weather stop a deer
hunt
We've done all this before in any kind of weather you
can mention. Shot clay targets when it was so cold the
traps wouldn't work, hunted grouse in a blinding
snowstorm (saw none) and float-fished swollen streams
with no chance of a fish.
What is "crazy" anyway?
Is it people like Us, who take every opportunity to
get out and experience life, or the workaholic who
spends 60 or 70 hours a week at his job?
He has no real friends, neglects his family, lives a
life of worry, and worships money.
We have a lot of solid friends who would go out of
their way for us.
We tend to disdain overtime, knowing instinctively
that our lives are made of time and not money.
We love the time spent with family, and our dogs.
True, we could use a little extra income.
The worker sees technical things- trends, actuary
tables and formulae. Tools and Bills of Lading.
Takt-time and Kaizen.
We see sunrises, patterns in the clouds, the changing
of the seasons, and all of Natures moods.
Ours is a life filled with Adventure.
What's the dollar value of that?
One lifestyle contends with Nature. The other is a
part of it.
You'll be here sharply at 5 or a little before. We'll
have a cup of
coffee, B.S. awhile and then step into the woods.
Maybe You'll hunt the lee side of the hills and rocks,
and I'll opt for the thicker cedars.
The deer will be standing under some shelter enjoying
the coolness and the quiet, and we'll be dry enough in
our raingear.
The raindrops will cling to the tips of branches like
strings of pearls,
and since we'll be the only hunters out, the wind will
sing a special hymn just for us.
I've heavily waxed my Hickory bow, and it will do
it's job if called upon, but the fact is, I'd hate to
shoot one today because of the poor
tracking conditions, and I won't unless it's close and
perfect--a Gift from God.
So why go? why not sleep in and watch a game on TV?
Why not go in to work and make a little extra money?
I just want to see it and be there. To feel it .
To dance Nature's waltz with deer for a partner.
To sit under the shelter of a downed cedar, share
lunch by a little smoky fire and swap lies with you,
maybe laugh a little, and to be there for you if you
need help dragging one.
To shoot a few arrows at pinecones and to live. Really
Live.
I suppose the "overtimer" wouldn't understand.
Probably call us crazy.
I bet I get the better night's sleep.
