Recurves and Endless Loop Strings
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:25:00 PM »
As some know here a endless string on recurves will make a lttle louder bow and some buzz or handshock compared to a flemish.  Here is something I started doing and what a difference it has made.

I start the string just like normal, and serve the loop the same. These are 10 stand strings with 8 strands of b50 padding.

I then serve 3/4" down and finish (whip) with the #4 nylon.  I then start with some b50 and start serving it around the string just like you normally would with regular nylon.

I continue down the string, trimming the padding stings as I go to give you a tappered look.  I go down about 5".

Once I get that far down, I go back down toward the loop.  This doubles the B50 up and makes a thick padding area.

I then go over the 3/4" of #4 nylon serving I had down.  Once I get within 6 wraps of the bottom of the loop I start my whip.  Doing this makes the B50 go right to the end of the loop.

This will take a little longer to do then the standard way because of the way you have to serve the B50 in.  But to me the results are worth it.

I'm not trying to be jerk...but have you compared this to wrapping the serving in yarn/wool?  Seems like a new way to skin the same cat.  (But that's what I love about archery...you get to skin it however you want!)

Seems like it would certainly be a "cleaner" way to do it, and perhaps a more durable option than the yarn.

Really interested to see how they compare.

May have to do one up of each and see for myself.

Interesting concept, but I'm curious to know too--have you compared it to using yarn or Bowhush?  (Btw, the sticker on the end of that spool says Dynaflight '97)

Newell, what kind of gains are you seeing?  I've never heard of any real difference in performance between endless and flemish when comparing equally well made strings, same material, same strand count, etc. and flemish have always been quieter for me.  Serious competitors like Rod Jenkins and Bill Leslie use flemish, I'm pretty sure O.L. uses flemish on his flight bows, and flemish have always been quieter for me for hunting.

I'm not biased against endless--I can make an endless string just as easily as a flemish, I just prefer flemish on my personal bows.

On my 1959 Kodiak I have an endless loop string with tapered serving and loop ends-it was made by Trap and the tapering idea was inspired by OL-
it is whisper quiet and period correct.
On my modern hunting bows I would not use anything but skinny Flemish twist strings made by LBR.

When I build endless strings all I do is double serve the ends  first.with #18 then serve over that with .030 halo and it gives me a good safe string that is not hard on the nocks of bows and is very Quiet ,, I have made 8 and 10 strand endless strings that are very good .. excellent for extra spare string for your pocket or pac as endless will not come untwisted like flemish will ,. Flemish are less work to build than an endless and work as well or better than endless ether or is ok in my books

When I first started shooting endless strings from my schafers I was very suprized at how quiet they were compared with flemish. With this they may be even more silent.

I have tried the wrapping with wool and yes it does do something but this way performed much better for me.  Much quieter and so far more durable.

That was a spool of D97.  I was making one with this to see if there was any difference compared to b50.  And after trying it for a few days it might be even better yet.

The first person that uses a standard endless loop on a recurve and replies to this I'll make one for you and ship it to you.  See if you notice any difference.

Alright, I'm gonna have to try it then!

Seen any problems with thicker strings?  (Right now I use 12 and 14 strand B50 Strings)
