Phat Head
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:07:00 PM »
I have killed alot of critters with alot of different heads, saw these and I have been trying them out this year. Does anyone else use it?
I am really impressed! Just shooting around, and how they worked on the 2 deer I shot. quick kills. Really thick blades. blah blah blah
Anyone else?

Doug

I really like the looks of the 190 gr African model.  I think that is the one.  They look great, but I have 60+ broadheads in my gear box.  It'll take me many years to use all of them.  Can't justify buying more at this point in time.

I tested the 145gr/w bleeder Phat Head. It's a 10. It appears small and stout, but it's solid, razor sharp and very well made. You'll never bend one over.
Nick at SF said a PH in Africa said they had a pass-thru on a giraffe with the 190gr 2 blade, which is something because a giraffe has like 4" of super hide on both sides and a huge body mass.
The Steelforce Phat Head is the sleeper trad head, in my opinion.
Granted, tomorrow I'm going out with 210gr Silver Flames because I'm a fan of sharpness overkill, but if I didn't have those heads, I would be all over the 190gr 2 blade Phat Heads.

I've heard good things about the 100gr. Phathead from a wheelie shooter (he shot them into a block target 150 times and they would still roll the hair off his arm, but they would pop it off right out of the package.) They look and feel like they'd shoot through an engine block without dulling the blade.  I'm gonna order some of them and give them a try.
Chasing my kids and my degree for now but come next fall the critters better look out.  ;)

Mojo and Kenneth
I am using the 145s.
Same thing I am seeing-- Sleeper trad head. Solid as a rock.
I have had pass throughs like never before (arrows DEEP in the dirt). Mostly I have used 2 blades with phantoms, wensels and open on Impacts tossed in.
That Giraffe says alot.
The fact there not real wide but still open the hole up makes them easy to tune. (well, I really didn't have to tune, they shot right with my feild points 30 yards from the frst shot)
These things are tough! I have touched them up after the shots but not sure I needed to.

They were at Denton Hill...I looked at them there and was impressed with the 145 grain version.  Might have to give them a try…then again I have waaaay to many broadheads to begin with!

So how do I order these?  :knothead:

Doug,

I've talked to Nick several times on the phone and Steelforce had a booth at the K-Zoo trad show last spring.

Nick thought the Phat Head was Steelforces best.

Counter to much of the new conventional wisdom out there about single bevels and/or 3:1 ratio's, Nick contends that a short, thick, double bevel will give better performance than anything else.

Having a shorter 1.25" blade surface vs a 2-3" blade surface has less resistence. A sharp, stout tip also opens up a wound channel.

I'm a big fan of reading about all kinds of tests with single bevels vs double bevels, etc. It's all very interesting.

But Nick MAKES broadheads. And in a major way. I tend to trust a guy that makes a living at making heads and out of all he's made, he says "this is the best head I've made in my opinion".

Anyhow, if anyone tries them, you will not be disappointed. As mentioned, I'm taking off in 20 minutes for an afternoon hunt and 210gr Silver Flames will be on the tips of arrows because my current setup is perfect with those 210's and an extra 10gr's in weight rings for a total of 220 up front. But I do plan on buying 2 packs of the 190gr African Phat Heads next spring to try with my CX Heritage's with some added weight screwed into the back of the insert. And if Steelforce does the K-Zoo show again next year, I'll pick them up in person.

I just talked to Nick about making the 190 african head into a 4 blade using the steel ferule on the 145. I should be getting them by wednesday. Love the looks of that head but hafta have 4 blades. He said they are not planning to be at k-zoo this year.
