fun with some paper today!
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:51:00 PM »
so today i couldn't hunt, my little son is sick. so i decided while he was napping i woud do some informal testing with my bows. first off let me say that i dont know what or ,if any, relevance these results make in the real world of hunting but, pretty fun. i was shooting into two brand new 5in. thick phonebooks, taped together and sat up against a block target.
ok, info for the test. i use a clicker on every bow i own( short draw syndrome:) ) and the bow weight is measured at the clicker. now for each bow and arrow combo. 1. bear montana-45#,14 strand ts-1 string, shooting 2018 with 150gr. woodsman, total weight is 550grs. 2. hoyt gamemaster-44#, 14 strand D97, shooting beman 500 with a 100gr. four blade stinger, total weight is 386grs. 3. chekmate 56" hunter-46#, 10 strand D97,shooting 2018 with a 100gr. stinger, total weight is 500grs. the phonebooks were shot from 18yrds, with every bow. no spot was shot more than once. and broadheads were resharpened after each shot. the results- well the chekmate won on every shot. the broadhead would pass thru the first book completely and just enter a tad into the second book....so about 5.25". second runner up was the montana!! it would get all the way to the back cover of the first phonebook and stop, every time...so right at 5". and lastly was my beloved hoyt gamemaster, the one ive killed everything with!! the razor sharp stinger, on every single shot, would only penetrate to the BLEEDER BLADES!! thats all! i was amazed that the arrow would only do that. i sharpen these heads till they will pop hair and still thats all i got from the hoyt. sure didnt think it would turn out that way..but then again a solid thick phonebook is tough for anything to shoot thru. either way it was fun!

i should also note some things about bow speed....the montana is the slowest by far( havent chronoed it) and the hoyt is the fastest, shooting in the upper 170's, while the chekmate is in the lower 170's. i would guess the montana to barley break 140's. these numbers may seem low but my draw is only 25".

got that right!! its amazing what these bows will do and how they'll suprise you. like mr.wrenn said" shooting into a phonebook is sorta like shooting a buffalo to find a set up for deer hunting". so obviously any of these bows will kill deer, hog, and turkey.

btw- as far as the trajectory goes... the chekmate shoots point on at 25yrds( with that heavy arrow), the hoyts point on is 30yrds, and the montana is point on at 18yrds.

My guess is that the lack of penetraion from the Hoyt comes down to total arrow weight.  Your bow weight is very close on all 3 bows and your arrow weight is 50gr diff. on the top two performers.  your 3rd place bow comes in with an arrow weight of less 114grn's.  get that weight up by 100-125 and I'm guessing that your penetration will be equal or maybe even better than the other two bows.

thats the other thing. at one time i shot 2018s out of the hoyt. they weighed 525grs and they shot sooo slow. im talking like the average chrono was 135fps! but with the 525gr. slow arrows, i shot a hog and got a pass thru. i then switched to the 386 gr. arrows and later shot a hog weighing about 20-25# less than the previous one. well i got a hole on both sides of that one, not a complete pass-thru but two holes, either way. so is there a fine line, even with our traditional bows, between speed and mass of the arrow?? im not sure and there are so many variables. i like doing these things though, makes me want to tinker more..guess i dont leave my engineer thinking at work:)
