Hog hunting
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:36:00 PM »
Hi, I hope this is the right forum for this question. I am from michigan and am big into deer and turkey hunting, but I am interested In trying some hog hunting down south somewhere next year. I cannot afford to go on a ranch so I was hoping to do public land or something like that. Can anyone give me some advice on where to go? I'm not even sure what state would be best for a beginer so any advice on the topic is welcome!

Lowndes County State Management Area, outside of Montgomery, Al.  has a "REAL" good population of hogs.  Requiers a state liscense, and a management area permit.  You can check it out at the DCNR web site,  www.outdooralabama.com
Also several other Management areas worth looking into.
I hunt at the Chocktaw National Wildlife Refuge, and the Mobile/Tensaw State Management Area.  Both are in So. Alabama and have lots of hogs.

Thank Jag, how do you hunt them? Spot and stalk or what?

Lee,
If you do decide to look into a ranch, I am headed to Texas toward the end of January, to hunt with Curtis at 7th Age for hogs and javelina.  There are a couple threads about the hunts and rates.  I will be driving down from Iowa by myself and you are welcome to ride along.  I have never hunted hogs before, but it sure sounds like Curtis runs a great operation.  His rates are very reasonable and we will be sharing came with other tradgang archers.  You can PM me if interested.

Spot and stalk.  Sometimes we ride in a boat untilo we find sign, then get out and head after 'em.  Can hunt out of a stand, if they're working an area real heavy.
On Lowndes, just look and you'll find them.  The game wardens and area managers are a big help when it comes to removing hogs from the area.  They want them gone.

Nope, no hog season, just use legal hunting equipment at the time...

Don't forget Corps of Engineers land around the various dams and powerhouses.  Some of those are during hunting season only, check first.  Bill

In areas like Lowndes WMA, is it worth the drive from Michigan? I mean is there a really good chance I will see hogs If I hunt for four or five days?
