distress cal for DEER????
« on: October 31, 2009, 05:04:00 PM »
there other night while hunting i saw a beautifull grey fox but could not get a shot. last night i went in to a spot close by where i just put a stand over looking a back hay field and thick brush/crab apple trees. i hear coyotes howling here a lot.  also on a well used game trail, my thinking was to use this stand as a deer/varmit calling stand. i took out a closed reed squeaker and blew a 5 or 6 low pitched squalls like a small rabbit or squrriel would make when caught. not 20 secounds afetr i hear something coming through the thick brush behind me. thought to myself here comes a big ole song dog and got ready. turned my head to see a big ole doe marching in looking for whatever was making the sound. she had a button buck in tow. she was swinging her head and looking everywhere for the culprit! i did not think i was sounding like a fawn in distrees at all so i would have to guess she was just curious??? could not get a shot as they both milled around behind me for 1/2 then walked off. as they got out of sight i grunted a few times and she slowly worked her way back. still would not hit the trail as the wind was right in her face and she knew something was wrong. she had me pegged with in about a 10 foot area that she was staring at the whole time. never busted me but knew something was wrong. if not for the wind i believe both would have come down the game trail. anyways has anyone else called in deer with a animal in distress call? and WHY do you think it works, curiosity?

Ken,

A interesting side note:
I have had deer come in to turkey calls quite often. I believe in that case they feel safe around turkeys and both often feed on the same food sources.
Never had much expierence watching deer react to distress "rabbit or mouse" calls used for predators.
Never had much luck using bleats and such for deer around here. More often than not I have watched deer run off when they hear the bleat. I have had limited success with grunt calls but more often than not I leave the deer calls at home now. However I have heard of guys who swear by deer calls. Always something new to learn and experiment with in the woods.
Take care,
Brian

I have had mule deer come in to jack rabbit distress calls. They are usually does and they are upset. They march around looking for what is going on and then leave. Gary

Buff,
i have had deer come in to turkey calls as well and i believe you are right, it calms them. i have had good luck with grunt calls bringing in does believe it or not! i did grunt in a nice spike this year and he was definitly coming to the call as i could see him and his reactions. yesterday was the secound time i had a deer come in to a distress call, i figure it must be that they are curious.

Hi Ken! I've used a fawn bleat/distress call a few times. Brings a doe in at the quick, if she still has little ones with her. Best to use the buddy system with it. The person calling may never get a shot (if hunting with a bow). Seems a deer can pin point the sound location real well.
