Fooled a Gobbler (Well Almost!)
« on: October 31, 2009, 11:59:00 PM »
I had three hours free this evening so I hit the turkey woods.  Got everything set up on what was a perfect night.  After getting settled into the blind I sat tight for a bit before digging out my calls, which I promptly realized were still sitting on my workbench at home.

I made the best of about an hour, listening to the squirrels knock each other out of the trees when I thought, "I wonder if I can call a turkey in with my voice?"  I started making sounds that were just shy of a cat in the washing machine.  Figuring I had scared everything in two square miles away, I kept it up for fun.  Might come in handy someday, you know?

After an hour of hootin', howlin', and hollerin' I sat back on my stool to take a drink of water.  About that time a gobbler snuck into my blind spot about 40 yards off and let loose, sending my canteen flying and dang near causing me to wet my drawers.    :scared:   I peeked out the side window and saw him looking at the decoys.  I yelped at him, 'cause that's the only sound I could make that sounded remotely like a turkey.  He gobbled back, I yelped, he gobbled back, I yelped...He came in to about 30 yards, and then decided I sounded more like a cross-dressing tom than a hen and bolted.

Had more fun than I've had in a long time!  I bet that gobbler's still shaking his head.     :biglaugh:

Chasing them old birds sure is alot of fun. Sounds like a great hunt whether you got him or not. Some of my best turkey hunts ended up the very same way. That's what keeps me going back.

Hey, Kris!  Hunts like this sure end cleaner.  I got home and didn't have to dress a bird, clear space in the freezer, etc. Take care.
