Rain out of binocular eyecups?
« on: November 10, 2009, 01:30:00 AM »
How are you guys doing this?  Coming from NM, I didn't have to worry about this, but last year's late season was a little frustrating.  No probs with condensation, but the eyecups with just one small drop would still distort your vision...

I use a longer strap on my binoculars and carry them over my left shoulder and under my right arm; that way they are never in the way when I go to shoot; and I keep them one layer down; so they are covered from the elements until I need them.
THE VOICES HAVEN'T BOTHERED ME SINCE I STARTED POKING THEM WITH A Q-TIP.

i wear mine on a short "spring cord" nearly on my adams apple. chin protects them to some degree and the cord stretches when i pull them up.

Welcome to hunting in the NW in the fall!  You only have 2 real options, the first, do as Brian said and keep them stored one layer down, the second, carry a soft cloth in your pocket to wipe the lenses off.  I keep my rubber eye pieces rolled down, which doesn't really help keep them dry but it does help with keeping the lenses from fogging and makes it easier when wiping the water off.  Keeping your fletchings dry and your broadheads from rusting is another challenge!  Good luck with your hunt and stay dry!

I use the bino rain wrap.

Try one of these. They are the ducks nuts when it comes to bino protection from the weather. I swear by mine. I have the Truglo version that is made by Badlands for truglo.

I made a leather cup for the eyepeices on my binos. Speading the tubes keeps it on. Wiping rain from eyepeices has ruined the coating on the glass of at least 3 sets of binos when I guided hunters.
My last binos are good ones and I want that coating to last.

why not a single lense cap, on one of the straps, which can be pulled off and pushed to one side, and put on when you need it?

My leupolds have those and they work great.- they have a rubber accordian belt in between teh eyecups so they adjust to the spread automatically when you putthem on and you cankeep them adjusted to your eye spread, not the cover.

Hey Roughcountry, can you throw a pic up- I'm always interested in some home made leather stuff.  Ray, what 'brand' are your cups?

I made a wood form to sew the leather up on. The open end needs to be slightly larger. I added a elk hide string so I can just drop the hood.
