Need help with actual Bison videos
« on: November 11, 2009, 12:12:00 PM »
I need some amo for the upcoming mtg. THe yukon presently won't allow us to hunt bison with a bow. They have regs that state the caliber of rifle you can use. They say the WOOD BISON are too big to hunt with a bow    .

It's my intent to get it changed. I have been down this road before but I think I need to show them VIDEO of actual hunts.

Then they told me I can't get close enough to them  "[dntthnk]"

I was just hunting with a friend on the weekend and a pushed a huge bull to him. I was within 15 yards of this guy and he didn't even know I was there.

I should have just stuck him with an arrow and proved it, but I thought better when I though of all of you out there.

What we don't need is radical bowhunter out there proving the obvious.

Anyway if you have any and you can send them to me by mail or post them on the web some where it would be great.

They have to be WOOD BISON - their other argument was that the ones they had studied were all plains bison and that they are so much smaller

Unbelievable

I'll have to check, but I think Fred Eichler hunted a wood bison in one of his DVD's.

OK, just checked out the DVD and He doesn't say what type of Bison. He did the hunt in BC in the pink mountains area.

you need video of cape buffalo and Water Buffalo.  They are bigger and tougher and a lot have been taken in the past few years with Traditional bows.

Ditto on the Cape and Water buff.  A bison won't compare.

No wood bison in the US except some staged near Portage, AK for release in AK.  Wood bison is on the ESA list.  I doubt the Pink Mtn bison are wood bison as no US hunter could import them and they have been importing them.  That said they are taller but I'm not 100% sure they are any difference in thickness.

Jerry,
I would contact Fred Eichler and get him to send you a copy of his hunt. If he knows what you are trying to do I'm sure he would help all he could. You might want to get some outfitters on board if possible. Tim Mervyn is conducting most of the Yukon bison hunts that I am aware of. I know number of guys that have shot them there with rifle with Tim. Might be worth getting his oppinion and support if you could. If you can get some outfitters on board you would also have the economic benefit/value - politicians like this stuff. Three Rivers sells the point blank Australian water buff video. Call Dale Karch (owner Three Rivers) and tell him what your up to and I'd bet he'll send you a copy asap. Chuck Adams has arrowed a few bison with compound but I'm sure he would help out if he could.

Steve H.
Wood Bison are 1/3 again larger than plains buffalo. My taxidermist that does alot of both says not much difference in hide thickness but bone structure is heavier he says.

Jerry,
If any input from taxidermist that knows and works with both of these species regularily might help I could arrange it. My good friend/taxidermist is now doing a life size for the Royal Ontario Museum and has also done same for Saskatchewan Museum. This guy disects the whole animal and recreats using entire skeleton. He knows the structure better than anyone I would say. He has alot of experience with both the Wood and Plains bison. Let me know if I can assist. You might also think about contacting Safari Club International and asking for their help. Another friend of mine, Archie Nesbitt from Alberta might beable to help if needed. Archie is one of the most experienced bow hunters on earth(compound)and has all the SCI contacts as well.

I don't know if this will help but I'll throw it out there.  Buff has a video of his kill on a cape buffalo and I'm sure some of the guys could provide some of there buffs from the land of OZ. Just a thought. Joe

Bones structure bigger, ok, I never get to see bone structure on them.  I have been to the place in Portage several times where both are kept and one big noticeable difference is the height with the Wood Bison appearing taller and a lankier look.

Doug Campbell has been on a lot of slaughtered ranch bison by arrows and can tell you lots of first hand results and he may have video???
