spine...tiny string uh oh
« on: November 22, 2009, 06:30:00 AM »
So I couldnt sleep ya it's 230 am AK time.

Got to tinkering..bad move.

Made a skinny string, 8 strand dynaflight with padded loops.

First problem, getting the serving thick enough a nock would stay on it.   Double serving didnt come out so good, not to mention it came out the wrong diameter.

Next, I got to tinkering with my liberty.  You know all those years of buying shafts and ratholing them away.  Well if I stick with this I'm going to have to buy more.   It seems it really likes 75-80lb cedar cut 28 1/4" bop.   The 79 came out just a HAIR stiff.  74'lb cut 29" bop was weak.  On top of it, having to taper shafts and loosing weight in the process...uggg!   These heavy spined cedars aint cheap.  I'm starting to think it's time to return back to my roots and get back to shoot barrel tapered ash.

Decisions decisions...I'm going to bed  ;)

If you use dental floss to build up the serving to the right diameter it works alot better. Add a touch of glue when you're done. I always had problems trying to double serve the skinnys.

Thanks for the tip.

I think for now I'm going to stick with my normal string.  The 8 is quieter..how much I dont know didnt have any silencers on it.   Kinda bothered with what I found about arrow spine last nite...both with the old AND new string.  Got some more tinkering to do, but it would make sense.  I just hate to have to jump up to such a high spine group, one that is crazily over priced imho!   When wood costs as much as carbon.....it's bothering!  It might be an instance where I just dont need the performance.  I would like the quietness part though....guess you just cant everything!

wish it was that easy..either way I think I've gotta jump up in spine.  Might have enough arrow length to stiffen up enough with my current setup..if so I aint touching a thing lol.

You home yet?  I'm still waiting on that blacktail pic!

On my 8 strand D97 I serve with No 62 .018 and then with No 62 .021,with this combo I get the fit I want.I shoot Easton 3D Super nocks and large groove G-nocks and get a great fit.

I'll give it a try Jr....thought about trying that, two different servings one over the other.   This hole arrow spine deal has me stuck for now.   Not looking forward to having to go up to 75-80lb spined cedars...contemplating the change back to ash.

Dan, you can add some heavy string silencers to "detune" enough to shoot the same arrows, if you don't mind taking a step back.
