Drop camps in CO
« on: November 24, 2009, 05:42:00 AM »
I'm headen out west next fall. I genrally hunt south west of Craig and north east of Meeker. Not sure if I should load up and drive with gear or who knows of good drop camp outfitters. I will have only three points so I'm limited to areas. Thanks

give W-3 a call--paul moore operates out of craig--
his drop camp is real nice-he did every thing he said he was going to do
and that area he dropped us in had more sign than i ever could have imagined!![i saw animals every day]
we didn't kill-but came real close--and buy the mulie tag--they were all over --one of our hunters saw 2 giant bucks!!and we had them wander in a couple of times while glassing
the drop camp is the way to go-it was way too far in to walk every day--the camp he put us in was at 9000'-

Just W-3 is the name. Is he a member of RMEF, to look him up?

I just did a drop camp hunt in the Uncompahgre Wilderness (unit 66, 3 pp draw) with Coffeepot Outfitters (Kelley Sanburg) out of Montrose.  The actual area my partner and I hunted was west of Lake City.  They also outfit in another part of unit 66 east of there in the Powderhorn Wilderness area.  I would highly recommend these folks to anyone at anytime.  They are not bowhunters BUT are locals ("old school") with years of experience outfitting bowhunters.  Great equipment, horses, mules, VERY KNOWLEDGABLE and HONEST people who will work overtime to place your camp CLOSE to the elk herds in terrain conducive to ambushing a bull.  They run a true wilderness hunt, in fact we didn't see another hunter for the 2 weeks we were at 11,600'.  We didn't take a bull, but I passed a cow and had multiple close encounters with bulls, saw great scenery, and made some new friends.  It's all a question of priorities I guess:^) I'll see if I can attach a photo from my hunt. Hit F5 to refresh your page if the photo doesn't download.

Hey Mike,
We bumped into Eagle Mountain Outfitters out of Gunnison.  They have drop camps in the Soap Creek Basin (main branch and west branch).  I can't speak for his expertise, I just saw him and his wife taking folks in / out of the West Elk  Wilderness.  He does have a website as I recall.  Certainly worth looking into and checking references.
Hope this helps.

Hunters (and runners, in my other life) find all the cool places.  Great photo, Gary.
