So I've been dabbling in traditional archery for quite a while now... got a little buck with my Byron Ferguson longbow my second year with it, and the missed a dandy with it and got frustrated.  I hung it up for a while, and then bought my recurve (RER) last year.  We just had a new baby, moved to a new house, and I didn't get to shoot it too much, and didn't feel right trying to hunt with it... didn't want to wound one.

I told myself that I would give the compound one more year.  This was the last year on our lease, and I decided that I'd look for a monster this year for one more year, then make the switch.  The new house gives me some room to shoot, and I figured that after dedicating this year to tagging a brute, I'd have no excuse to not make the switch next year.

Well, I guess it was meant to be.  A couple of fridays ago, the brute showed up and I tagged him - 12 non-typical points, bladed tines, height, width, you name it.  I'll stop talking about him there, cuz the point of this is that I'm making the switch!  I'm moving my bow rack right by the back door, setting a target up out back, getting some more arrows, taking advice from some friends, and I'm giving it a run!

Thanks for the inspiration on here... and keep it coming.  Hope to start posting some pics of my new-found accuracy soon!

Next move is to get the compound a new home.  Then you have truely refocused.  My move came on the ride back from elk camp in Idaho.  Sold my compound to my hunting partner and never looked back.  Heck now I build the dang things for a living. LOL

Congrats on the deer and the newfound switch!  It just takes TONS of practice to get to be a great trad archer.  I'm definitely not there yet but shoot as much as i possibly can!!  Those RER's are nice bows.  I saw my first one at the archery shop (a guy had one) last weekend!

There are a few of us who have graduated from training wheels to the real deal! This will amp up the enjoyment level for you...it sure did me! Wish I had done it long ago.

Yep, fiddled with trad for ten years without a kill.  When I was serious about killin, I would grab the wheels.  Finally decided to sell it, and had my first trad kill that same day.  You gots to sell the wheel bow!

Thanks for the advice guys... not sure selling the wheel bow would be a good option right now... my wife is very supportive of me and all I do, especially hunting (she goes with me)... but over the course of the last 3 years I bought a fancy new compound, then fell out of a treestand and shattered my elbow, so I had to sell that and buy a new lighter draw compound cuz of my elbow... then I bought the recurve on top of that.  Not sure selling another bow would go over too well.

But again, thanks for the advice!  Maybe I'll run it over to her parents or something... out of sight out of mind, right?

If you are dedicated enough, youll take the trad bow anyhow.  If you don't want to sell it, just keep it.  No harm in that.

no need to sell it, I still have my wheelie bow although it's been in a locked case for a while, but God forbid I should develop target panick, or get an injury that won't allow me to shoot traditional gear accurately before season starts then I can always fall back on the wheels if I have to as I'm a bowhunter but prefer trad gear, not to mention all the $$$$ I have wrapped up in it and would be lucky to get half of that for it.  I say keep the wheels for that just in case, and spend all your free time shooting and learning with your trad bows.  Congrats on the monster buck and welcome back!!  I missed a big 14 point with a droptine making it a 15 point between 180" to 200" last year at 7 yards with my wheelie bow because I got all excited and forgot about all the gadgets and shot instinctively.  Well I've been carrying stick and string all year and haven't seen sign of him but my hunting buddy just saw him 2 days ago so I'm hoping I get another chance to lay it on him with the Mohawk or Shrew!!

I had to shoot a compound again and even had to use a draw lock with it until I could get my shoulder back to the point I could start to draw and hold a stick with a string on it. It now resides in the basement with the spiders.(no! not B.W) but I did see a brown recluse down there. I hate spiders.I have been shooting my Thunderstick III 56@28 but I'm not sure how that'll work when the real cold weather hits.If I have to I'll drop back to the Spirit 47@28 but if the shoulder demands it I'll pick up my Bear Grizzly 40@28.
I only have until Dec 10th because my 2009 season will be over according to my surgeon. Back surgery at 9:30 that day, home the same day but he says no bow hunting for 6 weeks. By then it will be over for everyone here in Missouri.
Having said all that, if all else failed I wouldn't hesitate to pick back up the wheels until such time as I could shoot traditional again. I intend to ask Dr.about hunting with a camera. I just want to be out there when I can be.

i know the feeling i gave my dad my brand new hoyt last year and since ive had terrible luck putting one on the ground 7 to be exact i still get that urge to take the old compound out but just cant do it
