maybe a second chance
« on: November 28, 2009, 11:56:00 PM »
I was really down on myself about missing a nice deer last sunday. Needless to say i got over it & I am more determined than ever to try for a second chance. I went thursday morning & last night without seeing anything. Well tonight found me back in the same sand with longbow in hand. Things were pretty slow & no deer to be seen. Light was fading fast & I let my bow down to the ground, got my pack loaded & undid my safety harness. I'd taken 2 steps down my ladder stand & heard a deer coming my way! It was really to dark to do anything but I didnt want to spook any deer so back in the stand I went. I pulled my bow back up as the deer is headed my way. Its really dark now but I can see this is a big bodied deer & i can just barely make out some head gear. The deer walks within 10 yards of my stand & b-lines for a persimmon tree not 18 yrds from my stand. At this point I'm thinking im going to be here for a while! Anyways he eats persimmons for about 5 minutes & heads to the east over the fence & out into the pasture. I decided to stay in the stand a little while longer so not to spook him. Finnaly got dowm & heade for the house. It was defanately pretty cool. I dont think he knew i was there so I will be back tomorrow to see if he won't come in about 10 minutes sooner. I love this time of year becaause you never know what will happen it can all change in a split second. Good luck 2 all in your persuit of the wonderfull whitetail!!

Can you move further in where he's coming from?  It'll help with the shooting light situation.

Good Luck

The moon will be getting fuller until Tues. That makes evening hunting, for me, anyway, the most challenging. Can you get out there in the AM?

I wish i had a dollar for every time this has happened to me. I hunt near bedding areas a lot and most time those older bucks want move a muscle until it gets dark thirty.

Bill is right about the moon...in KS most of the deer will come out and feed in the moonlight. Try that stand in the a.m..

Always cool to have a "close encounter" of the deer kind!

Hats off to you for not taking a shot in fading light. It can be tempting so kudos to you!
