Interesting question. Burdock, or wild gobo, grows everywhere, so it could be a good indicator. Deer eat a lot of leaves once they die and fall off in the fall, so why not gobo? Unless it gets bitter or there is something out there that they like more, it seems likely. I would not think it to be what they are actively seeking in the fall, when they are trying to get as much fat put on as possible, and there are acorns and such to be had.

I don't believe I would hang a stand just because there is a passel of burdock in the area.
PS: people eat it too.

Well...if hungry enough, they will eat anything.  Deer will never die with an empty stomach...they can essentially starve to death, but it will be from a lack of nutrients.  They will eat tree bark or anything they chew.  Now -- I doubt it's a normal food source, but they would eat it in a pinch.
