0.66 slug lbs/s
« on: December 07, 2009, 04:20:00 PM »
Well I was on the phone to Sid at Border discussing my new Hex 5 limbs on order when we got to talking about the Hex5s I have on my  DAS...we were talking about the set-up and at that time I had only shot one weight of arrow.. I was getting 193 fps with a 560 grain arrow... I was wondering what I would get with some heavier arrows..
Sid mentioned he had a "virtual bow" kind of program so he punched in all the details and gave me some predictions. Well i have since had the time to build some arrows and chrono them, Sids predictions were pretty damn close!
I am shooting Hex5 hunters with the hyperflex core on a 17" DAS master riser, 63# at my fingers 29" draw.

So 560 grain was giving me 193fps 46.33 ft/lbs ke and 0.48 slug ib/s momentum.... not bad by any standard....

So on to a heavier arrow...

730 Grain arrow.... predicted 174 fps and 0.57 slug lb/s momentum

Actual speed 175, and 49.65 ft/lbs ke 0.57 slu lb/s momentum!

And so the real heavy one...

I gave him a weight of 930, he predicted 160 fps and 0.66 slug lb/s

My finished arrow weighed in at 940 grains traveled at 157 fps and gave me a whopping 51.46 ft/lbs ke and 0.66 slug lb/s momentum!

Now I only got to shoot the 940 grain arrow once, I didnt have time to epoxy the insert... so when the arrow hit the target at 18 meters (20 yds) the  shaft penetrated DEEP, nearly up to the fletches,  and stopped but the 250 grain pile and 100 grain insert carried on and smacked into the concrete wall snapping off the brass insert and putting a hole in the wall!
i got some looks from the other club members I can tell ya! pretty much along the lines of what the hell you going to shoot with that?!!?

I am impressed with these limbs on the DAS to say the least, they work really well with heavy arrows, and work amazingly well with REALLY heavy arrows... that heavy arrow is touching 15 grains per pound and yet the ke and momentum was more than the 200 grain lighter arrow at 11.5 grains per pound... now that shows how efficient these limbs are!!
And good to know that Sids virtual bow is right on the money...

Also once roughly tuned I was stacking those 730 grain arrows in the 10 and 9 ring on a 60 cm fita face at 20 yds

Got Border limbs and want to find a good arrow weight with usable speed? give Sid a call

sheesh.. 0.66 slug lb/s ouch!

I reckon with 250 grain woodsmans up front or the Nanook single bevel 290 grain heads there is not much to worry about when it comes to penetration on any game that I am going to shoot!

Oh and FYI I am using Easton Full Metal Jackets with 100 grain brass inserts and 250 grain piles... (300 spine 31.5" long)
To get the 940 grain arrow I used a FMJ "Dangerous Game" shaft which is 17.2 grains per inch and a spine of .250 I used it full length, with 3 four inch feathers, 100 grain brass insert and 250 grain pile.

I have another set to build too, with Dangerous Game 300 spine at 15.5 grains per inch.. just might give me the best combo of speed and smackdown power,,,   I will report back once the more detailed testing has been done..
Stand up and say it loud: I am a gap-shooter and proud!
(Although I sometimes use the force)

Wow!  With your heavy arrow set up, your bow would likely be adequate for Buff at only 63 pounds.  Impressive!

I'll be getting a new set of HEX 5's in about a month....55# @ 28. I am shooting 340's out of my 60# Winex limbs so I am hoping that they can be tuned to my new limbs.

Congrats  :)    You are going to love em! And those mkII limbs are a bit more efficient than the mk1s I have on the DAS at the moment.
i have on order a set of MK2s at 50# to use for FITA 3D on a bernardini Mamba 19" riser giving me a 64" bow... gonna be smooth and quick....  Only problem talking to SId is it gets expensive fast... we got to talking about the new Black Douglas ILF triple carbon spine riser and before I knew it I had paid and am now waiting a painful 15 weeks for delivery.....
But what a riser..... I will post up a pic later....

Oh I forgot to say, you may find, depending on point weight, that you have to go down to 400 spine,,,,  The Hex5's are amazingly smooth and many report that they have to drop down in spine...
To give you an idea I was shooting FMJ 340's out of my widow at 52# with 75 grain inserts, 125 grain points 30" bop. With the widow these shafts bareshafted perfectly. I Shot the very same shafts out of the DAS but at 63#...  same perfect bareshaft!  and they fly and group perfectly. 175 fps from the widow and 193 from the DAS/Border...   same arrow... It seems that the border limbs with their extreme recurve, launch the arrow in a smoother fashion, allowing a weaker static spine to behave dynamically stiffer...

Here's a pic of the new ILF riser you are talking about....and, yes, you have to be careful talking or emailing Sid. He is a good salesman!

Yep, thats it   :)
Mine will be a 19"  in all Heritage Midnight (the darker wood in the centre of the riser in your pic) with buffalo horn on the back of the riser....
