Been tied down lately and haven't had much time to hunt and don't see more time coming this season. So I headed out the door this evening to hunt a spot behind my house that connects with my place.
I don't know why , but I usaully don't hunt at home. My recliner and remote, plus the road hunters and dogs get me down I guess.
Anyway I figure with the gail force winds the deer will be bedded down in a deep cedar choked bowl, and with the leaves soaked from the rain it will be perfect still hunting.
I walk out a hardwood ridge with a deep bowl on each side and check the swirling winds as I make my way to the end where it opens up to a green field.
I haven't been here all season and find three good rubs on a trail leading into the field off the left side of the ridge into one of the bowls. The wind is perfect. Blowing straight out of the bowl into the field, so I find good back cover and make a stand for the last hour of the day.
My mind is kinda drifting as I think about things other than deer when I spy movement down in the thick bowl. Wow! I actually have a large deer at about 30yds.
It's thick, but can tell if it stays on course it will top the hill out at about seven yards. It's in no hurry and now I see several bodies moving around behind it.
I'm checking behind it for antlers when I realize the first deer IS almost on top of me. I ready my bow and get my feet set. She's at 10yds, but head on. She moves behind a tree that's about five yds in front of me and I come to anchor. Hearts pounding...this is gonna happen!
She decides to check under the leaves for an acorn and all I can see is her head and rump! DANG! Hurry up! I don't practice a static release and have been holding for a while now.
While holding at full draw I see a very large doe coming behind her. OH YEAH! The large doe is broadside about twice the distance away. I shift my view to her...hmmm... limb in the way. Kneeling slightly I find an opening and pick my spot.
Arrow on the way! I see hair and fletching spinning..oh what a beautiful shot races thru my mind. In the same moment I see her crouch to launch and my arrrow touches her back. Daggumit.
Oh well, no harm, no foul.
I found my arrow and there was hair stuck in the vented blade.lol I got greedy and in the moment forgot to pick my low spot. I always pick a low spot.
I've killed some deer this year, but I think this was the best hunt of the year! Awesome..Can't get that in a tree with a wheelie bow.
