Sitka Gear sizing?
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:36:00 AM »
Looking for someone my size that can let me know what size I should be looking for.  I'm 6'1", 220lbs and normally wear a 38" waist jean. My shirts normally are XL or XXL depending on brand.  Would like pants to be able to accomodate a base layer or two but not be too baggy without, would probably be looking at the 90% pants.  I did pick up a Sitka traverse top in XXL that fits good over a base layer or two.  If I go with a Sitka base layer, should I than go with XL?  Any input would be appreciated.

Mark,

I am exactly your size.

When Sitka Gear fisrt came out it was sized small.  Now, it runs true to size for me.

XL for the base layer tops and L for me on the bottoms.  90% XL pants should be good to layer.  Ascent XL pants are going to be baggy and large are going to be tight (Larges are perfect when I am under 200# in "sheep shape")

Any of the jackets or vests I'd get XL.

The key thing to remember is SG should not be baggy like we are conditioned to wear in our hunting clothes.  It stretches and moves with you.  If you keep that in mind and go with it, you will be a happy hunter

Mark,
The sizing is still off considerably, for at least some of their gear, relative to what you will be used for outdoor clothing from other manufacturers. For example, I'm just a tad smaller than you (6'0", 210, 38" waste jeans), and usually wear shirts/jackets that are large, sometimes XL. I recently purchased the Sitka Kelvin and Celsius jackets in 2XL (and there is not a lot of extra room, either). I knew to order the 2XL because a local Cabelas FINALLY had a few (literally) samples of Sitka gear on display. I couldn't even begin to get into the large, and the XL was very snug, and the 2XL just right. I've had similar issues with pants, mostly in length - way too long, or way too short (I have a 32" inseam, which is average for most hunting pants). So my advice is to try a pair of what you want on first before you plop down some serious money, as you may be paying a good deal in return postage. For the most part, great stuff, though some of the colder weather gear is out of my price range.

I wear large in everything and the Sitka large fits me perfect. Some say it runs a touch small may be true.

It runs small if you are not used to the "athletic" cut.  Their stuff fits me whereas I have always had to pay double for pants because they go from Cabelas to me to a seamstress so I don't have "gangsta crotch".

The fabrics also allow plenty of movement.  I wish they still had pant sizes like the old Mtn pants and not just S/M/L, etc. 30's fit me perfect but the M is a tad bigger than I want, but still fits well.

It is a good idea to wear with what you will wear under it when you buy, you can wear 5 layers and be streamlined in Sitka and will be as warm as you are dressed in 3 thick bulky layers with traditional hunting clothing, but if you are larger in some areas than others be sure to try before you buy, or order two and send one back.

Good luck, they make good stuff, but don't give it away either...

The only recommendation I have is to buy the long size in the pants.  I'm 6'2" and the regular pants were big time high-waters.  Sent them back and got the long pant and they are much better.  At 6'1" I assume the regular pants would be too short for you as well...

Mark, we carry Sitka Gear at A&H (just click on our link at the top of the page) and I use it as well.  I'm 6'3" tall, weigh 225#, have a 37" waist, 46" chest, 36" sleeve, and 34" inseam.  I wear XL -long pants.  The XL waist is a bit loose on me but no problem with a belt.  The length is just right for my 34" inseam.  The XL vest and jacket fit me perfectly.

Call Dan at the shop and maybe he can help you with a few more answers.

It runs form-fitting, as it is supposed to. Almost like slightly loose workout gear.

Picture this if you will...

At Compton a couple years ago, I was trying to make a point about the fit and how the SG stretches and moves with you.  I took a MEDIUM jacket of the dummy and had Denny Sturgis and Mike Mitten put it on.  The zippers actually held!!!  Then they drew their bows.  No problem.  You wouldn't want to go to that extreme to wear it to hunt, but you DO NOT want this stuff baggy like we have been programmed since out first step in the woods.

Mike and Denny are NOT medium kinda guys   :biglaugh:

Steve O,

Which series of clothing do you recommend for elk hunting in September?  I am pretty well set for whitetail treestand hunting with Hidden Wolf wolfskin and wool, which I love.  Just looking for something that is less bulkier for the pack when elk hunting.  I was thinking about the 90% series for the pants, not sure for the top.  What's your setup for mountain hunting, especially to take away the evening chill when you stop moving.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, I'm sure that Steve will be back soon.  But here's what I wore this September in the Wrangell Mountains hunting for moose.  Polypro long undie bottoms, 90% pants, SG long undie top (traverse top).  That's what I wore while hiking and carrying my backpack (along with a SG beanie hat and gloves).  Once stopped to glass I'd layer up with the Celsius vest and then add the jacket over that if it was really chilly.  This combo kept me warm in mid-30's temperatures with wind.   If there had been no wind (the wind was always blowing in the mountains this season) that combo would have sufficient for weather a bit colder.

Mark,

I am always HOT when I am elk hunting, so I go a little lighter as I don't sit much.

Core top, core bottom if it is cold.

Ascent pants--if you get no other piece of SG, get the Ascent pants, you will thank me later.

Traverse Top

I'll have my Celsius vest (now probably my Kelvin vest, I love that thing!), 90% jacket and rain gear in the pack for bad conditions and they don't ake up much room at all.

The beanie hat works real well and I keep a Celsius hat around too, they are very warm.  The shooter gloves are VERY well designed and are definitely on my hands on any mountain hunt.
