Help me decide on arrows
« on: December 22, 2009, 12:31:00 PM »
I am getting my Striker bow in the next few weeks and want ot build an efoc arrow that is hard hitting and packs a wallop.
I plan on bear hunting with it in the next year or so.
I am dead set on tapered wood shafts/footed with a single bevel head.

 bow specs are...
 54" slapstik 47# at 28"
My draw is 28.5 to 29"
I want at least a 29" to 29.5" arrow in the 550 to 600 grain range.

 lets hear your thuoghts.

Building a true "EFOC" arrow with wood is not easy, but you can definitely get a lot of weight up front with them and enjoy front loading advantages.

You'll need much more spine than normal and the ability to load up the front, as available glue on heads won't be enough.  We offer a front loading jig and Woody Weights are also available to help you with adding extra point weight.

I'd suggest you contact your Bowyer and get an idea what spine he thinks you'll need with a normal weight point.  Stu Millers calculator would also be very helpful.  Then figure on jumping another 10-20 pounds if you're going to pack a lot of weight up front.

I shoot Surewood Douglas Fir with 220-250 gr points and needed an extra 10 pounds spine to do so.  My bow is cut to center, if yours is cut past center you could need even more.

For me I'm not convinced that EFOC arrows will work well with wood or even aluminum arrows. Can work great with carbon arrows because they recover so much quicker then other arrow types.JMO

I don't have any experience with woodies just wanted to say congrats on the Striker.  I own a Striker Select for a little over a year and love it, be sure to post up some pics when you receive it. What type of woods? Joe

I think that EFOC arrows work great with any material arrow shaft.  They can be harder to achieve with some than with others due to shaft  weight and ending up with a really heavy arrow.

The further forward you push the FOC ( balance point ) the quicker the arrow recovers from archers paradox, the better the fletching can control the arrow, the better the arrow flies.

For that light of a wood EFOC arrow you will most likely want to go with a footed shaft with added weight in the front of the shaft or on the tip ( woody weights ) and then use a really heavy glue on head.

I would reccomend looking at Whispering Wind Hexashaft footed arrows or the Surewood Shafts.  Use a very heavy footing wood and it will help and make the shafts tougher as well.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.  If you change your mind, there are some posts about getting to EFOC and UEFOC arrows with carbons.  I can help you with some data if you interested in them later on.

S n S, I'm kinda partial to wood shafts and always built my arrow with cedar shafts.  Ust recently I decided to go with Doug fir shafts from Surewoodshafts.com.  I ordered one of their "Test Packs".  You can get 3 - 6 different spine weights (depending on which pack you get) in a pack.  I was really impressed how quickly I received my order.  I really like Doug fir and I'm going with them.  I've found them straigter than POC, more consistant and make a great looking shaft.  They dont smell as nice as POC when your taper or break one.  The Doug fir tapers nice with the pencil type of taper tool making a good clean cut.  The POC looks like I chewed a taper.

Just my humble opinion and observation.

good luck
Joe

Joe M: I ordered the dessert camo cause it will probably be my go to bow for hunting. I shot all of Ricks bows at his shop a few months ago, super fine fella and he makes some sweet bows.

 great info guys.. Appreciate it.

Slowbowin: I will check out your stuff for sure.

Any of you guys shoot the hex shafts with EFOC and have any luck?

Well after talking with Tim today I am gonna try tapered  sitka spruce with an osage footing, internal weight added and about 200 to 250 grain head.
According to Tim at braveheart I will end up roughly around 25% EFOC

Just a starting point guys, we'll see what happens LOL
