Nebraska Trads
« on: December 23, 2009, 10:21:00 PM »
I am returning to traditional gear after 30 years of not using it.  Dusting off the Kodiak mag I got for Christmas in 1975.  Problem is I need some help!  Any of you Nebraska Trads know of shops in the area that can help a newbie with set up - arrow selection etc.  Thanks!
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch

Where are you from Mitch? Not much for trad shops around Ne. The nocking Point in northern KS is a great place. Mike will treat you right. There are quite a few trad guys around that would be more than happy to give you a hand. I live in Lincoln if that helps.

been through there a "few" times. I know there is a group of guys from columbus that shoot at Platte Center. Don't know if there on here much. They are members of the Nebraska Traditional Archers.

Mitch,
 Welcome to Trad Gang.
I'm just west of Elba. I have enough shafts laying around to get you started. Just let me know specs on the Kodiak Magnum and your draw length.
Lots of help available right here on this sight.
Also you could call Tim at Braveheart Archery in Kansas, and he would walk you thru the proper process.
Check him out in the Sponsor Classified section.
You can email or PM me and I'll give you my phone # if you have any questions.

Thanks David & Eric - Does the Nebraska Traditional Archers have a website?

Right now I am trying to find an arrow/BH combination that will work for me.  I've tried some arrows I have lying around - 2219, 2216, and carbons (cabelas stalker extremes).  Can get them to fly decent with field points but not so good with broadheads.

I hate to order a dozen arrows and then they not shoot well - I would like to take my bow in and try some at a shop.

Mitch, your gonna have to give us some specs on your draw length and bow weight to get ya close on arrows. I'm guessing your trying to stiff of arrows and someone closer to ya can probably get ya some to try. I'm not so good on alum or carbon since I shoot wood but if ya ever want to give them a try let me know I have a pretty good range of spine in wood.

David,  my draw length is 27.5 and bow weight is 45#.  I am not opposed to wood - that is what I originally shot back in the day.  Alum or carbons seem to be more durable and more economical for a guy who doesn't always hit the target.

MW,

There is a small shop in Chadron but that is quite a ways west.  The owner is a pretty interesting guy; fun to visit with.

With your setup, I would recommend starting with full length 2016s.  If you have an arrow saw,you can go through the bare shaft tuning exercise to find the right arrow length.  I have a few early 70's 50# recurves and they shoot 2016s and 2018s pretty well.

No experience with wood arrows and have never shot carbon using trad gear so no help there either. Contact me if you want a few resources on bare shaft tuning.  I can provide some links that have easy to follow instructions.

MW I'm down at York.  We have a nice little range here, if the weather was decent.  Would be glad to help out as possible.

You may even try 1916's. I have some I shoot out of a 45 lbs bow. I have a 29" draw and shoot a 30-31" arrow. 100-125gn points. Another option is to do a search for Stu Miller spine calculator. Will help get you close. There was an updated version someone posted not long ago.

Mitch,
I'm from Grand Island  - if you want to make a trip down my way sometime after the holidays - have several arrows you can try out.  Would be happy to send some home with you to get you started.

If the 1916's work - I have some old Easton Swift shafts (brand new from the late 60's).  They are yours if they will work for you.

Thanks for the help and offers guys!  Didn't expect so much help so quickly - what a site!  Once we get through this weather and the holidays I am going to take you up on your offers.  Best thing would be just to shoot some arrows and see how it goes.  Thanks again!

Great!  Look forward to meeting you and shooting some arrows.  Am in Nevada visiting our daughter,son-in-law, and new grand daughter.  Lots of snow here in the high desert, but no wind and the sun is shining.  Sounds like the weather back home isn't all that great.
Have a great Christmas.

Used to live in Albion '73-'76 but in North Bend or Fremont except for one year since that time.  If there's a Trad shop in Fremont, I'm unaware of it.  I take care of most of my trad needs from trad vendors at summer 3-D shoots or on-line.  The Nebr. Trad Archers hold their yearly summer rendezvous in Fremont each year and I'd highly recommend it.  Usually around Labor Day.  I'd also highly recommend joining the Nebr. Bowh. Assn. which is a great organization.  Rick Schack in Albion could get you info.
