your shot % on big game?
« on: December 25, 2009, 01:59:00 PM »
So I am curious how everyone shoots and handles pressure out there. Looking back over your bowhunting career, what is your overall shot percentage hit or miss on big game. A hit would be any fatal shot on the animal and a miss would be a clear miss or a non fatal shot, or even a good shot were you hit a branch or something. I'm at about 70% right now, with 2 misses for the year, and about the same last year. How about the rest of you?

After about 40 some deer, I stopped counting. I can say that this year I am 2 for 3. That is, one miss, two fatals. Both went less than 30 yards after the hit and piled up within sight. That's the way I like it... no blood trailing necessary.

On my miss (small 6 point) I "thought" that I undershot the buck. I was on the ground and shooting up toward the horizon. I searched and searched for the arrow... even used a metal detector the next day. During firearms season my son found the arrow sticking in a tree about 6 1/2 feet from the ground just on the other side of the ridge.

Still don't know if I shot low and the arrow skipped, or if I shot over him.

I don't have any problem as long as it is not a big buck or a big turkey gobbler. Everything else I kill. I'm worse on turkeys. LCH

I was at 50% for this year until tonight. Now I'm 33.3%! I overshot a doe at 14 yards.  On the bright side, it was a clean miss and I got my arrow back. I just need to touch it back up. I still have 2 days to hunt to fill my second tag.

This year I was one arrow=one deer. Actually, over the past several years I have killed the last 3 deer I have shot at with trad gear, or 3 arrows=3 deer(two does, one buck). During the few years before I killed my first trad deer though, I sucked badly while hunting deer with trad gear. Since reading Byron Ferguson's book, "Become the Arrow", my shooting has improved tremendously. I'm still not great, but I can hold my own.

Overall, I'm about 85% since I started shooting trad back in '95. My first deer with a longbow was 50%, missed her clean on the first shot and nailed her with the second as she stooped to sniff the fletch of the miss.

This year, I was 100%, 3/3, two deer and a turkey. Not complaining a bit, other than the cost of gas to drive down to Virginia.

Hmmm lets see. 1 shot at a Black Bear at about 10 yards. Miss. 1 shot at a Muley Buck at about 20 yards. Miss. 1 shot at a Whitetail Doe at about 20 yards. Miss. I guess I am sitting at 100%! Beat that! HA HA

1 shot at a doe = 1 miss.  Deer 1 / Me 0.  I plan to make it 50% tomorrow.    :banghead:

This year I'm 1/1.Overall lifetime percentage, yeeeah uh the deer are winning.

By a mile.

In my defense though, until I starting using archery forums on the net,I never knew how to properly setup, tune or shoot any bow, wheel or recurve.Since then I've had some dang good success...actually 2/2 for the last two years.

70% bow, 100% gun, not that gun really counts
