Noticed something on Howard Hill's gravestone:
« on: December 25, 2009, 10:19:00 PM »
Hello all,
Today I was searching for info on Howard Hill's grave, its location, etc.. I saw a pic of his grave stone. On the backside of he and his wife's gravestone is their name "Hill" and on either side of that name is carved or etched a drawn bow with an arrow in place, knocked and drawn back. At first I thought that is neat. Then I noticed that they are recurves! Gyah lee I thought, who in the world ordered that stone and approved it because everyone who knows anything about Hill knew he loved and shot only longbows and held recurves in disfaver if not disdain.

I mean it is still a neat and beautiful headstone, but seems to me if I were his relative and ordering it I would make sure it was longbows on it instead of recurves! Perhaps the relative or friend that ordered the stone did not know any better.

Speaking of HH, I grew up with and used to work with a couple of guys in Prattville, Alabama who were kin to HH. They were telling me when he moved back to Alabama like in the mid to late '60s they, cousins and nephews, etc, all helped him fix up the place he had bought, repainting, remodelling, etc.. One of them told me that Howard had a quiver of arrows next to each door of that house and he seldom went out or stopped by a door without shooting a few arrows. Until the day came when he was too physically ill and unable to, he shot his bows on a daily basis. An archer to the last!

In the very near future I am going to visit his grave and add one of my arrows to the great cedar tree behind his grave. I hear tell there are several arrows from visitors and fans in that tree, and people leave momentos on his grave.

Take some photos of your trip when you get there to post on here for those of us that live in different parts of the country.

If I ever get down that way.......

This is a link to a page on the Howard Hill Longbowmen web site.  One of our members visited Howard's grave.

As to the bows on the headstone, I'm only taking a wild guess here, but it's possible the headstone company had a selection of carvings to choose from and templates for making them.  This isn't uncommon.  Just a guess though.

Yep, they probably only had a certain template to go by. I did not think of that. It is the thought and caring that went into ordering it with bows on it that counts anyway.
