I may be getting smarter
« on: April 14, 2007, 12:10:00 AM »
In January I over did it. That is I strained my left arm from the forearm to the elbow. I quit shooting for about six weeks or until it felt a little better. By that I mean the pain level subsided but in all truthfulness still existed to a degree.
So I gave in and ventured out to my back yard range and shot a few arrows. Hey! Felt o.k. So I shot a few more, then many more.
Fast forward to the next day.The pain was back with a vengence!
Well I'm now at that point (again) where my arm feels sorta o.k.-- but this time I will resist and not shoot! In fact I'm going to wait until after our trip to Yellowstone in June to even attempt taking up the bow.
That should still allow enough time to begin a strengthening/shooting schedule before deer season. I write this for any out there who may be recovering from a simular injury.Don't rush, it only prolongs the recovery period.

I have had the exact same problem for the last couple of years. Once with my forearm and once with each foot. The forearm took almost a year to heal after I pulled a muscle/tendon closing a 14" valve at work. One foot I pulled it just by stepping up on a 12" high concret pad, that took 6 months to heal. The other was my stupidity. If you are on a statin type of drug for heart problems or to control your cholesteral levels, it can play havoc with your muscles. I was on Zocor for 5 years and believe that was what caused my pulls. I talked with my Dr. about it. He didn't want me to switch drugs, but finally put me on Zetia, about 6 months ago. It hasn't been long enough to tell if its going to do me any good, but I'm hopefull. The statin drugs work in your liver. The other in your intestines. If your on a statin type of drug you may want to dicuss it with your Dr. Good luck Hap

I over did it one time about 12 years ago shooting aerials, (they are so much fun arn't they).  I was using a bow about 6 pounds heavier than I was used to and shot a lot.  The next morning woke up with bad pain in the shoulder.  That was in july, come september I still could not shoot.  Ended up going to a leaft handed compound for about 7 years before I could go back to right handed traditional.  Don't overbow and don't over shoot!

Hap, I know Exactly what youre going through with the High Cholesteral Drugs. The Dr. says it  MIGHT  cause  some  Muscle Ache, so I was Instructed to take mine before I Crash for the Night.
NOW,  My Question Is This: They Say "Muscle or Joint Pain Might Be a  RARE, but SERIOUS Side-Effect."!!  :scared:    :readit:

If this malady occurred gradually, it could be what is known as "tennis elbow".   This condition involves burning pain from the elbow "funny bone" extending down the forearm muscles when you lift or pull.   The condition is a result of repetitive motion with athletes and carpenters being major candidates.   Go to the drug store and get a brace.   Use ice and ibuprofen to treat.   If symptoms persist contact a doctor.   I just went through the surgery to correct this problem two weeks ago.   The procedure involved cutting the tendon and scraping the damaged tissue.   I will probably be shooting my bow within the month since it was done with a laser.   Surgery was after 4 cortisone shots and intensive physical therapy.   Learn to lift with your palm facing towards the sky.   Hope this helps.

Shakes-I know what you mean by aches. I got so bad that they put me on Celebrex. Worked like a charm, but long term use is bad on the heart. That's when I started reading and researching. I'm no longer on Celebrex while taking the Zetia, I don't have the aches and pains I used to have. I know what you mean about "truth in advertising", I've worked in the Pharmacutical industry for 41 years. It don't work that way. Hap
