No, number of strands isn't the factor. It's the diameter of each individual strand that is different, and of course smaller diameter strands make a smaller diameter string. You almost have to see them side by side once to see the difference and know for sure. A good archery shop should be able to tell the difference. If you are uncertain and have a bow that should be using dacron your safest option would be to buy a new string. There are a number of people here that make great strings. Oliverstacy has provided me with some great strings lately, and there are others as well.
