Beman - MFX 340 carbons: getting a starting point
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:15:00 PM »
So I am experimenting and would like some input.

Firstly with these shafts you need to glue up the inserts FIRST    . This means you need to cut the nock ends for tuning...no problem doing that I have the saw.

So I guess the only way to tune them is BARE SHAFTING to get a starting point right.

If you fletch them - well you can see the problem if you have to cut them    .

I am trying to set them up for a good FOC with just using tips. I have a variety of tips and I want to shoot the Ashby heads that are around 315 grains.

This poses another problem - roving with JUDO's

max weight is 125 grains on them...hmmmm

So there it is....  :bigsmyl:

Jerry,

A glue on Judo with a 125g steel adapter is a BULLETPROOF 250-260g.  I bent the tips of the Judos in half, but haven't hurt an adapter yet,

Start long and cut from the back end.  Easiest way is to bare shaft to get close, then you can fletch up a few with the feathers an inch lower than usual to fine tune.

If you want to sacrifice a few feathers, this is a perfect application for the fletch tape.

I use the saran wrap method for tuning my carbons.I like to use wraps on my carbons and like to have a few fletched to tune with my bareshafts. For me cutting from the nock end doesn't work for me,because I like my wraps on while tuning also.I use alittle saran plastic wrap and push in the insert to hold it in snug. But you need a softer target to shoot into like a bag target so it won't pull the insert out while tuning.I shoot, trim and tune my carbons without using any heat or glueing in my inserts. This way has worked great for me.

What's your bow weight vs draw length?

JRY309 - that would be great but I followed the directions and glued them all in already...hmmmm

Went to fast in my decisions right

Well:

In my view the epitome of efficiency is procrastination (as long as there is the last minute).

You see if you procrastinate long enough you don't even end up having to do it....think about it. how many times have we been asked or worse yet TOLD to do something and we have not done it INSTANTLY...maybe thought about doing it...really wanted to do it, but just didn't get around to doing it and then...

Presto the person (might have been yourself even) comes to you and said "hey that thing I asked you to do..."forgettttt abouuuuut it" (supposed to sound like Tony Sapprano)

Didn't have to do it..procrastination worked
   :bigsmyl:

Then:

If they come to you in a panic welllllllllll..you have the last minute right   :bigsmyl:   .

Works for me.

So I will go and test these arrows today inside at my work place.

right now with the FOC calculator provided by Rob DiStefano

so right now ( not tuned) I have a

30.75" arrow

balance point of 23.75"

so that gives me 8.375 difference

@ 3.25 % times 8.375 gives me an FOC of 27.24%

a total with a 100 grain insert and a 315 grain tip of 727 grains which at 58#@28" gives me a 12.53 GPP.

I think if I can get this to tune now I am in business.

Either way works for tuning, for me the main goal is to get my carbons tuned.

THanks guys and thanks steve O I will give the judos a try.

I am going to get at her today if my arms holds out....I buggered her up prior to xmas lifting some 150meter rolls of 14/3 wire...I was cleaning up our shop after pre-employment electrical class and I usually just put two fingers in the steel roll and hoist them up to the shelf ( their pretty heavy , but I have doing the same thing for years) and one slipped and when I went to get a better hold it pulled my finger joints real bad and the tendons in my elbow...pretty tender right now.

Can't believe the stupid things I do when I am in a hurry.

Anyway it's hard to even pick up a two litre jug of milk...crap
