Bowhunting around Conroe,Texas?
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:04:00 PM »
Anyone from around there or familiar with the area? I may have an opportunity to move there in the next few months and weighing options. I'd rather not drag out the whole story as lots still up in the air. But if you don't mind e-mail here or at:
 [email protected]

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Joe. I been checking out the fishing aspect. Would be nice to have a decent boat again. I'm sure lots of bowfishing too. I always miss that come spring. Don't know about those big gators though. Someone pulled a 23 footer out of there last summer. Have to be careful where I throw a stick for my Lab to fetch!   :scared:

There is some good public land around lake Conroe, and an archery only area as well.  Check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.  When you get down here give me a shout and we can go check it out.

Don't buy into the 23 foot gator story, a guy I know who is a biologist for the state says it's a bunch of baloney.  A 13 footer is big, and I think the biggest was around 17 feet.

Conroe is right near Sam Houston National Forest, about 160,000 acres that has bow hunting only areas.   So there is that, private land you will either have to get lucky and find somebody with land that will let you use it, or most likely you have to get in a lease, or a day hunt place. The cheapest leases that I have heard about are $600+ per year and those are in east Texas. I have heard, but never personally looked into of leases going for $2500+ in the hill country.
Ask me about CTO.

Texas is mostly private land. If not available, you'll hunt public which can be different. No baiting plus size restrictions will earn your reward the hard way. It's hunting. Stumbling into a 13' gator at close range is guaranteed skid marks. All water drains across the state have gators. I don't know of 1 gator attack in Texas. PM for more help.

I second Chesters' input on Sam Houston.. there are some good hogs there as well as deer.  Ya need to get there and find yourself a good spot though.
Getting older I tend to talk to myself but, at least I know that I am as smart as the one I am talking to.

Can you hunt SHNF for hogs year round or is it only certain times of the year? That is something that I was never able to figure out.

That's good info guys. Thanks. Good to hear about the bow zones. Still a long ways to go with my job. A few months at least until we get everthing finalized. My Manager is getting transferred. He wants to take me with him but.....we need to get some terms. Anyhow if all goes well should be there by summer.
