I asked a while back about how much weight is added painting fletching staining etc. This time I'm curious about how much to thin my sealer,I'll be using the minwax polyurethane,and would appreciate any input from anyone who has experience with this product,as to how much to thin it and what is used to thin it,THANKS in advance.

Poly u is pretty thin all by itself.. just use it straight..

When I made arrows commercially I used Minwax poly. I thinned it til it was  watery....usually a third or a quarter of mineral spirits. When I tried it without thinning it would sometimes be thick, have bubbles or take forever to dry. However you decide to do it it makes a great finish.....and it is cheap and available just about anywhere.

I use Minwax fast drying poly, and thin it about 3:1 with good quality paint thinner. I'm dipping without a gasket, and put 4 or 5 coats on the shafts. Makes a really nice finish, and seals great (shafts stay straight). I got that method from Fletcher, and I've got some of his shafts that are three years old, and I've never had to straighten one of them.

Bill and Brad pretty much covered it, 3 or 4 to 1.  The thinner finish dries harder, too.         have made them change formula.  The new product will be called "High Build" and cost more, of course.

If Min wax changes just go to Lowes or Home Depot flooring dept. and get some of the floor finish...works just as easily and is every bit as good.

I thin my Hellmsman Spar Urethane about the same as Bill, about 25-30% min spirits. Also when its thinned, that first dip, I let the shaft soak 15-20 seconds. The bare wood will realy soak up that first dip.

I have always applied my Min Wax with a rag, I always figured if I applied pressure, and heat from the rubbing that the finish would go deeper into the wood.
When you dip, it's only on the surface.
Cut a sealed shaft in half, the finish barely penetrates the wood, even the way I do it. It's not like you are going to get a finish deep into the pores, just isn't going to happen.
Min-Wax is a great arrow finish.
